Criticizing the Mamilla Cemetery Project - 1931

The above newspaper clipping is taken from Davar, December 9, 1931.

It records the criticism directed at the Mufti Haj Amin El-Husseini at the open ing sessions of the Islamic Congress that convened in Jerusalem.

Among the themes was his dealings regarding the Mamilla Cemetery:

"The Mamilla Cemetery, the placed where 70,000 holy warriors from the times of the Crusaders are buried has been desecrated.  It has been turned into a quarry, managed by a relative of the Mufti.  On the site, a hotel [the Palace; now, the Waldorf-Astoria] has been constructed, where wine is imbibed.  The Ashra Al-Amri Mosque was sold to a Catholic monastic order where pigs are raised."

The Museum of Tolerance can rest easy.
