Below is a great photograph.
It shows the approach to the Kotel (Western Wall) area in the 1946 via a path from the direction of the Dung Gate. You can see in the upper left the buildings of the last line of buildings in the Jewish Quarter. The occasion is the Sukkot holiday.
You will, of course, notice the lack of construction and the great area of deserted fields before the crowded slum area called the Mograhbi Quarter.
