New Human Rights Case: Save This Trader

Details:

An Arab, who police say was caught bringing wood products manufactured in a settlement into Bethlehem, is the first test case of the law that was signed by PA President Mahmoud Abbas on 28 May, making trade in goods produced in residential Jewish communities a criminal offense.

Abbas' legal advisor Hasan Al-Ouri was quoted by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA at the time as saying the regulations would target "the cancers found in the Palestinian body, which target the Palestinian people's humanity, soil, and fate."

This case is being portrayed as one of smuggling goods from the Jewish communities into Arab shops. The accused was indicted by the court, which decided to keep the man in custody until the trial was completed. He was not identified.

Captain Amin Aqil, director of the Bethlehem customs office, told Ma’an that the merchant was detained on his way to Bethlehem on the Al-Ubaydieh road. The accused will state his plea in the coming week, and he is expected to mount a defense.

This is a case for human rights activists and seekers of true justice.

This man has a full right to engage in commerce as long as he is not causing any physical harm by trading such as illegal drugs, weapons, etc. He is working to buidl coexistence and peace.

He should not be on trial or incarcerated.

Demand of Abbas that he be released immediately.
