From Bad to Worse

First, the bad news from a NYT report:-

Palestinians in Gaza fired several thousand mortar shells and rockets from 2001 to 2005, killing 12 Israelis — 8 of them in Israel and 4 in Gaza, the Israeli military said.

Since the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the Palestinians have fired about 700 rockets at southern Israel, causing injuries and damage, but no deaths.

So, at least we have a semblance of statistics.

And now for the really bad news:-

"Why should we be the only ones who live in fear?" said Muhammad Abu Oukal, a student at the Islamic University in Gaza City. "With these rockets, the Israelis feel fear, too. We will have to live in peace together, or live in fear together."

Palestinians also see the rockets as retaliation for Israeli airstrikes, or an act of solidarity with West Bank Palestinians when fighting heats up on that front.

Israel, meanwhile, describes the rocket attacks as terrorism and argues that any rationale for firing the rockets evaporated when the government withdrew its soldiers and settlers from Gaza last summer.

Why the "really bad news"?

a. They are not living in fear. Israel has done nothing to them to cause the rockets to be fired.

b. Retaliation? See "a" above.

c. "Israel...describes...as terrorism"? Ah, but you (the NYT, the world, etc.) do not describe these attacks as such.

Now I understand.
