A Letter Haaretz Wouldn't Have You Read in Translation

In the Haaretz newsprint Hebrew edition of January 11, a letter appeared, composed by Professor Arnon Sofer of Haifa University (it's reproduced below).

The subject is the letter of boycott signed by 155.  These university and college faculty members signed a petition calling for an academic boycott of the Ariel University Center.

Haaretz did not translate the letter and publish it in its English edition did, it now appears, publish it (see a comment below).

I think it should be at least summarized.

Soffer rips into these demanders of a boycott of an Israel academic institution but not because he is a right-winger.  He isn't.

What he does is simply point out the hypocrisy involved.  He asks that all universities that sit on "occupied" and "conquered" land be boycotted.  He notes that

- next to Mt. Scopus campus of the Hebrew Univeristy is the refugee camp of Anata.

- Tel Aviv U. sits on the lands of Sheikh Munis.

- Beer Sheva's Ben-Gurion U. was conquered in 1948 and nearby are 200,000 Beduin's in quite poor conditions.

- the Weizmann Institute sits on land, as well as Rehovot, Nes Tziona nd Rishon L'Tzion, upon which Egyptian peasants lived over a century ago.

He concludes that not only are those that signed hypocrites but ignoramouses as well.  Justice must be done all around.  All of Israel's universities need by boycotted according to the reasoning of the petitioners.  And also Columbia University in Manhattan, built on Indian land and where many underprivileged people live.

(He doesn't mention his own institution, Haifa U., but I am sure there's a reason for that.
