(tekhelet is the blue or purple color of which the ritual fringes attached to four-cornered garment needed to be dyed)
The tekhelet made by ‘Ptil Tekhelet’ is made from the murex trunculus snail. The Radzyn or Breslov tekhelet made by Machon HaTekhelet is made from a squid.
The Ptil Tekhelet organization makes their tekhelet with strings according the Rambam which has one half of a shamos string blue and therefore will provide for 7 white and one blue string, or the Raadav which has the entire shamos string being blue, and therefore will provide for six white and two blue strings, or according to Tosfot two blue strings and two white strings which will provide for four white and four blue strings.
More background here.
The High Priest in the Temple Service also required techelet.
