My Comment at the NYTimes

I lwft a comment at a NYTimes article.

Here it is with the two follow-sps:

    Yisrael Medad
    Shiloh, Israel

Think of this:

Egypt has a peace treaty with Israel but its PM came to Gaza yet didn't bother to come to Israel (yes, I know he doesn't recognize Jerusalem where the gov't sits, although Sadat came [but he was assassinated by the Muslim Brotherhood] and yes, Tel Aviv now is dangerous, but no reach out to Israel;

and

Mahmoud Abbas, titular head of the Pal. Authority, is probably more afraid to go to Gaza than Israelis are (where is he, still in NY?)

Doesn't the irrationality of the situation and of the the Hamas approach not convince Israel's detractors that something is too very wrong on the Arab side?

    Well to be fair to the Jerusalem comment...

    The United States doesn't recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and either does the United Nations. It is actually occupied terrority. Additionally, the land the Knesset sits on doesn't even "belong" to Israel - they lease it from the Greek Orthodox Church.

    Does anyone want to go back to pre-1967 Jerusalem when under Muslim rule it was closed to visitors? Under Israeli rule, Jerusalem is safe, welcoming, and open to all.

    Is anyone familiar with the in-fighting between Christian sects about who runs the Church of the Holy Sepulcher? The Church is divided among four sects, and there are continued tensions among them.

    I wish people who comment here would really learn and understand the politics and policies of what came before, and how things are now.

    The bottom line is that Israeli democracy has engendered safe and open travel to anyone from anywhere who wants to visit Israel. This had not been the case for hundreds and hundreds of years under Christian and Islamic rule. Who wants to return to that?
