Many years ago, I had scoured the Central Zionist Archives for material and came across this letter:-
Found at File Z4/143, it is a letter from Ze'ev Jabotinsky pointing out to the Zionist Executive back in April 1922 that it would not be a very good idea to "support the Haaretz [newspaper] in an unofficial way". A secret subsidy is immoral. Jabotinsky, it should be recalled, started out his life as a journalist when he was not yet 18 in Russia, then Switzerland, Italy, back to Russia, Turkey and on.
But, in a practical sense, "nothing remains secret in Jerusalem", he wrote. How prescient!
