The group was on a hill, near Kibbutz Nir Am, overlooking the Northern Gazan town of Beith Hanoun, from where most rockets are launched.
"At one point, I saw a vehicle approaching the border and our guide, Israeli Public Security Minister Avi Dichter, assured us they were probably farmers would would not fire at us," Del Negro said.
"No sooner had he said that, there was a volley of machine-gun fire and then Mati Gil (Dichter's senior aide) fell wounded and I sought refuge behind some cement blocks as bullets were whizzing over my head."
