Quotable Words: The Real Division

George Orwell’s final statement, which best summarizes his most constant political stance from a letter to Malcolm Muggeridge:

“The real division is not between

conservatives and revolutionaries,

but between authoritarians and

libertarians.”

And let's add this, both from "A Life of Letters":-

"What sickens me about left-wing people,

especially the intellectuals,

is their utter ignorance of

the way things actually happen."

That was an expression of Orwell’s revulsion toward all “the smelly little orthodoxies that compete for our souls” that explains his distrust and contempt of intellectuals from a letter of October 1938.
