Israeli-Arab actor gunned down in West Bank
JENIN, West Bank - Palestinian police say a well-known Arab Israeli actor, director and political activist has been shot dead by militants in the West Bank town where he ran a drama school and community theater.
Jenin police chief Mohammed Tayyim says Juliano Mer Khamis was shot five times Monday by Palestinian militants. A Palestinian ambulance took his body to a nearby checkpoint to be transferred into Israel.
Mer Khamis was the son of a Jewish mother and an Arab father. He starred in several critically acclaimed Israeli films and appeared in the 1984 U.S. film "The Little Drummer Girl."
In recent years he ran the Freedom Theater in Jenin, attracting protests and vandalism from some Palestinians who saw the theater as a challenge to their traditions.
Seems religious elements didn't appreciate his cultural contributions to local society.
P.S.
Just was reminded: he played the chief Lechi assassin in Avi Nesher's film, Rage and Glory.
