The Yesha Council, the West Bank settlers’ umbrella organization, said in a statement on Monday that any continuation of the construction freeze, which began last November, would lead to “severe political instability within Israel and the ultimate collapse of the current government.”
“The government made it clear on numerous occasions than the freeze was a one-time temporary gesture,” said Danny Dayan, chairman of the Yesha Council, “and we will not stand by quietly if the people of Israel are lied to.”
The settlers have the sympathy and support of most of Netanyahu’s governing coalition, including his own Likud Party, although Israeli commentators have noted that the coalition has proved remarkably resilient so far.
