Conservative clerics in Iran have criticised a proposal by re-elected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to include three women in his new cabinet. "There are religious doubts over the abilities of women when it comes to management," said hardline lawmaker Mohammad Taghi Rahbar. He said his views were shared by many MPs from his clerics' faction, which dominates Iran's parliament. The Islamic republic has not had female ministers since the 1979 revolution.

A border police force on Monday afternoon arrested three Palestinians who were trying to cross a checkpoint near Kalkilya in a car transporting a Kalashnikov rifle, an optic sight and a magazine.

Police arrested three Arab residents of east Jerusalem at a checkpoint on the Tunnel Road south of the capital Jerusalem on Monday evening, after sappers discovered three pipe bombs in his car. The explosives were apparently to be used in a criminal, not terror-related attack, police said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has proposed a new regulation that would prevent most Israeli Arabs from becoming career diplomats. He said that only those who complete military service should be eligible for training with the foreign ministry.
This would exclude most Arab citizens, who do not serve in the army, as well as ultra-Orthodox Jews, who are exempted from conscription.
