Yamina: 24.4%

Likud: 22.4%

UTJ: 20.4%

Otzma: 6.9%

Yisrael Beiteinu: 3/6%

I finally climbed up to our attic (it's reachable by a collapsible ladder) to see if the files I have there from the period I was the coordinator of the Knesset Lobby on Behalf of Jonathan Pollard.  Those were the years of 1987 - 1996 (or so).

As MK Geula Cohen's parliamentary aide, I made the call to our then UN Ambassador Binyamin Netanyahu to discuss the conditions of his then incarceration.  I carried around the various petitions to be signed (Avrum Burg declined, calling him a 'criminal'), helped compose the motions for the agenda and the parliamentary questions, research legal issues, maintain contact with the family and lawyers and lobby American Jewish groups.  I also visited him twice.  

The first time was in 1990 at Marion, Illinois and again in 1993 at Butner, North Carolina.  By the way, we were not alone as Jay had a special government agent sit in on our conversation in case he might reveal a secret and no Hebrew was permitted to be spoken.

I recently tried to make contact with Jay to urge him to phone through both to Geulah Cohen as well as Edna Solodar.

Jordan Claims Its Red Line Victorious Over Israel

Jordan is claiming it is behind the decline in Israel to discuss Al-Aqsa in the Knesset plenum.

The Minister of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs Nasser Judeh said that the head of the Israeli Knesset withdrew the proposal submitted by Knesset member [Moshe Feiglin] who tried to table a motion to discuss the guardianship by Jordan on the Al-Aqsa Mosque.  The Foreign Minister told the House of Representatives yesterday «not one Knesset member nor any member of the Knesset can to change the custody of Jordan on the Islamic and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem ».

And added:

« هذا الوصاية يعترف فيها العالم والديانات وبابا الفاتيكان يعترف بوصاية الملك على المقدسات». وأرجع التراجع الإسرائيلي عن مناقشة الوصاية الهاشمية على المقدسات إلى الموقف الموحد للدولة الأردنية والتي بدأها الملك بجملة من الاتصالات وما قامت به الحكومة من اتصالات إضافة إلى موقف مجلس النواب الذي أعطي إشارة إلى أن الوصاية الهاشمية خط أحمر لا يمكن المساس بها.وقال جودة « الموقف الموحدة للدولة يجعلهم يدركون أن هذا الأمر لا يمكن أن يقتربوا منه، موقفنا جميعاً كان له أثر في التراجع». 

which translates as

«this guardianship recognizes the world's religions and the Pope admits trusteeship King sanctuaries» . He attributed the Israeli retreat from discussing the tutelage of Jordan on the holy sites to the common position of the state of Jordan and initiated by King and a set of communications and connections as well as the position of the House of Representatives, which gave an indication that the custody of the Hashemite red line that can not be compromised. He said, «the consolidated position of the State makes them realize that this can not come near it, our position all had an impact on its removal from the agenda».

UPDATE

Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, denounced Knesset Member Moshe Feiglin who "broke in" Wednesday morning to the "al-Aqsa mosque, guarded by members of the Israeli police and then infiltrating into the surface of the Dome of the Rock".  He was 

"accompanied by approximately 18 settlers , and toured in the eastern region not translated , as also boarded on the surface of the Dome of the Rock , and continued his tour for half an hour".

And

This was an a most heinous act and the most serious violations of practice against the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which comes in the context of targeting the extremists to the presence of Al-Aqsa Mosque and put their hands on him and facilities , stressing that the Al-Aqsa Mosque Islamic waqf for Muslims alone without other...He appealed to the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and all bodies and institutions and the international community to take immediate action to stop these practices and violations before it is too late.

Running for Knesset on the Back of a Bus

Oztma is a new party list running in the elections for the 19th Knesset.

The Ichud Leumi list split and Arieh Eldad and Michael Ben-Ari seems to have found no choice but to run together in an independent list.  The next two candidates are Baruch Merzel and Arieh King.

Tibi Goes Vulgar

I was not going to comment on this but since Arutz 7 has, I can't?

From their report:

The Knesset Ethics Committee voted, Tuesday, to suspend Member of Knesset Ahmad Tibi (United Arab List) from everything but voting for a week, starting on Sunday, following complaints by Knesset member Anastassia Michaeli (Yisrael Beiteinu) and other citizens about his recent comments during one-minute Knesset speeches, when he said Michaeli's "plumbing was screwed up." [see below]

Referring to an incident in which Russian-born MK Michaeli splashed Member of Knesset Ghaleb Majadele with a cupful of water, Tibi recited in Hebrew, in sarcastic poetic fashion, "Anastasia grew up in the junk piles of Yisrael Beiteinu, or shall we say Russia Beiteinu. From there it was a short step to suggest the law of the muezzin, who had become a Bibi-Anastasia joint venture, and the unwise use of water, during a time of drought when every drop counts, After all, Israel is drying up, but is really not ashamed."

His speech ended with a vulgar Hebrew hint at an Arabic curse referring to a mother's anatomy.

Even Haaretz was circumspect:

Following the incident, Tibi read a short poem poking fun at Michaeli, the words of which were...

"...Anastasia, who has run amok, / Poured water on her colleague / And thus I will call the baby by its name: Kos Amok [literally, a 'glass of madness', but a play on words on an Arabic profanity].

Kos in Arabic is the female genitalia.
Amok in Arabic is "your mother's".

But that's not all. At 30 seconds, Tibi can be heard saying, in Hebrew,

aval Anastasia, she'nidfakah la ha-installatzia

which is also a vulgar reference in that it translates

but Anastaisa, whose plumbing (which refers, in slang Hebrew, to her reproductive organs) has been screwed...

and we know that she is the mother of eight and "She has a kosher home, she says, is careful not to mix meat and milk, and has enrolled her brood in state religious schools".

Spotted An Error

At this official site, reviewing the Second Knesset events, I found this for January 21, 1952

MK Menahem Begin was suspended from participating in the Knesset sittings for three months, due to his participation in the demonstrations against the reparations agreement with West Germany held on January 7th.

He was suspended due to his hurling an insult, "hooligan", at David Ben-Gurion, the Prime Minister at the January 9th debate in the Knesset plenum.

I've asked them to correct this error.

This May Be A Record

Thirty-four parties.

What a democracy.

Thirty-four parties have submitted their final lists to elections officials and will run for Knesset in the February elections. In the most recent elections, 31 parties vied for the 120 Knesset seats.

The United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party and HaTikva-National Union submitted their lists shortly before the deadline. Both parties had conducted last minute internal negotiations to unite various factions—UTJ reached a deal keeping the Degel HaTorah and Agudat Yisrael factions under one roof, while HaTikva-NU united the HaTikva party lead by Aryeh Eldad with the Jewish Front party of Baruch Marzel and Rabbi Shalom Wolpe and the Tekuma and Moledet factions of the NU.

The Likud party also submitted its list at the last minute, after reaching a deal integrating National Union MK Effie Eitam into the party list...
