A monument will be unveiled in Hebron today for residents who were relocated from the northern Labrador Inuit community in 1959. The plaque will include the apology from the provincial government, as well as the names of those who were forced to move away from the community. In January 2005, Premier Danny Williams apologized on behalf of the government, for the way in which the decision to close the communities of Hebron and Nutak was made and for the difficulties experienced by the residents and families, as a result of the closures. Today's ceremony will be attended by former residents or their descendants, as well as Nunatsiavut President Jim Lyall, Premier Williams, and ministers and officials from both governments. Lyall says it's an historic event for Labrador Inuit and represents the end of a sad chapter in history. A similar ceremony will be held at a later date at Nutak.
