And he explains:
Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, who will meet the pontiff when he visits the Holy Land on May 12, said that a cross is not proper when visiting the Jewish religious site, The Jerusalem Post reported.
"My position is that it is not fitting to enter the Western Wall area with religious symbols, including a cross," Rabinovitch told The Jerusalem Post. "I feel the same way about a Jew putting on a tallit and phylacteries and going into a church."
But take a look at this series of pictures:
That's Haifa's Chief Rabbi She'ar Yashuv Cohen, in October 2008 and this month.
First he has a hat, that a black yarmulke and then a white one, quite prominent.
If he can do that in the Vatican, the Pope, by me, can wear a cross.

I a gree with your general position; the pope can wear whatever he wants. The hat/ headcovering, however, is not a religious symbol, despite the obligation to cover one's head. Note that the pope is wearing a headcovering as well
You're right but I hope no Rabbi wears a cross.
If you don't want the Pope wearing a cross then don't invite him. He's the Pope. He wears a cross.
I think they just wanted to have matching hats.
