Another Gazan Killed; Demand to Arrest Haniyeh

But this time, due to a tunnel collapse.

...Medical sources said that Basem Al-Shaer, 25, was killed in the tunnel collapse to the south of Rafah, and eleven others were injured in the collapse of a tunnel at the Egypt-Gaza border on Friday

Those tunnels, as we know, are the conduits for terror.  Through them come the missiles and rockets.

But this is even more interesting:

The Palestinian Permanent Representative of the Palestinian National Authority in Berlin, Salah Abdel Shafi (son of the late Palestinian resistance figure and head of the Red Cross in Gaza, Dr. Haider Abdel Shafi) called Israel to invade Gaza and to arrest Ismael Haniyeh and Dr. Mahmoud Al- Zahar of Hamas “in underwear” and to “not stop in the middle of the way as they did in 2008”. He also called the Israelis to destroy all the mosques in the Gaza Strip, saying: “If there should be a ground operation in Gaza, this time I expect to see [Hamas prime minister] Ismail Haniyeh and [high-ranking Hamas leader] Mahmoud al-Zahar in their underwear”, and “The Hamas offices that were destroyed are not important. The real offices are the mosques, which are connected to a widespread network of tunnels. Everything happens underground”.

I think we need propose peace talks between Ramallah and Gaza City.

Gaza's ruling Hamas will not stop arming itself, the No. 2 in the Palestinian group told The Associated Press on Saturday, signaling tough challenges ahead...Moussa Abu Marzouk, deputy to Hamas' top leader in exile Khaled Mashaal, said talks on a further easing of restrictions are to be held in Cairo on Monday. Hamas and Israel do not meet directly and the indirect talks are held through Egyptian intermediaries.

The Justice Department unsealed charges against two Iranians — one of them a U.S. citizen — accusing them of orchestrating an elaborate murder-for-hire plot that targeted Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi envoy to Washington and a key adviser to King Abdullah. The Iranians planned to employ Mexican drug traffickers to kill Jubeir with a bomb as he ate at a restaurant, U.S. officials said.

So, how many innocent Americans do you think would be at that restaurant?

Revolutions devour their children. The spoils go to the resolute, the patient, who know what they are pursuing and how to achieve it. Revolutions almost invariably are short-lived affairs, bursts of energy that destroy much on their pathway, including the people and ideas that inspired them. So it is with the Arab uprising. It will bring about radical changes. It will empower new forces and marginalize others. But the young activists who first rush onto the streets tend to lose out in the skirmishes that follow. Members of the general public might be grateful for what they have done. They often admire them and hold them in high esteem. But they do not feel they are part of them. The usual condition of a revolutionary is to be tossed aside.

The Arab world’s immediate future will very likely unfold in a complex tussle between the army, remnants of old regimes, and the Islamists, all of them with roots, resources, as well as the ability and willpower to shape events. Regional parties will have influence and international powers will not refrain from involvement. There are many possible outcomes—from restoration of the old order to military takeover, from unruly fragmentation and civil war to creeping Islamization. But the result that many outsiders had hoped for—a victory by the original protesters—is almost certainly foreclosed...The West likely will awake to an Arab world whose rulers are more representative and assertive, but not more sympathetic or friendly.

My friends and I discussed this and a few wrote and published but who would pay attention to "rightwing Zionist bloggers"? Who would believe that the best candidate for power takeowver is the worst palyer: Muslim Brotherhood, al-Queida and othe radical Islamist groups?

That framework was unacceptable to our Western-oriented commentators who wished, and hoped, and desired democracy, and human rights and progress. Their fulfilling prophecy was about themselves not about Egypt, nor Libya nor the other Arab regimes.

It is Islam. It is tribalism. It is clans.

And to make matters worse, read this from another article there:

After the meeting, the group announced that the Mubarak regime, which was a “strategic treasure” to Israel, is gone forever. “It has been replaced by a strong nation that doesn’t know weakness and knows how to get justice for the blood of its martyrs. In the face of the [Sinai incident], Egyptians have united across ideologies, political parties, police and army and put aside their differences for the sake of the nation.” The coalition announced a list of eight demands to be handed to SCAF. They include banning Israeli naval forces from passing through the Suez Canal, increasing Egyptian armed forces presence in Sinai, and reconsidering the gas deal...

...What they are demanding is redress for what they regard as deep-rooted grievances: about a treaty they believe denies them of basic rights to sovereign land (the Sinai); and more significantly, that compels relations with a government that has dealt repeated blows to the Palestinians and to fellow Arab states. The Israeli blockade of Gaza continues to be a key point of contention—including Egypt’s own continued part in that blockade. These grievances may become increasingly critical, as the military struggles to maintain its carefully tended security relationship with Israel amid growing tensions in Gaza, and as Egypt attempts to affect a rapprochement with Hamas even as it tries to control militancy in Sinai.

So, that's why there were Egyptian terrorists who participated in the Eilat attack.

How Come This Doesn't Happen Here in Jerusalem?

Over the past decade, Arabs, or more properly Muslims, have been fighting each other (okay, they've been doing that since the early 7th century).

Not only fighting but one of the most favored actions is planting bombs, or suicide-carried bombs, in mosques of all places.

JAMRUD: At least 30 people have been killed as a result of a blast targeting a mosque located in the Jamrud Tehsil of the Khyber Agency Friday while more than 100 are injured, Geo News reported. The roof of the mosque collapsed following the blast.

Somalia mosque explosions kill 30

Two explosions at mosques in Somalia's capital Mogadishu have killed at least 30 people and wounded scores, witnesses said.

It was the second attack in a week on a mosque in Bakara Market – an area of Mogadishu dominated by members of the country's two main insurgent groups, Hizbul Islam and al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab.  Saturday's attack was in the Abdalla Shideye mosque which is often used by al Shabaab officials to deliver speeches.  It is not far from the Abu Hureya mosque where a landmine killed one person on Tuesday.

"Many screaming people were piled up on each other, some dead, some injured," said a witness who asked not to be identified.

"There were more than 30 dead," he said, estimating that over 100 people were injured. Al Shabaab armed men arrived and surrounded the mosque," he added. 

It was not clear who was behind the mosque blasts, although residents suspected they could be the result of in-fighting between the insurgent groups, which are both trying to topple the Western-backed government

More than 20 people were killed and over 100 were injured in two explosions in Iran's southeastern city of Zahedan on Thursday night, a provincial emergency official was quoted as saying by IRNA news agency . "In the two explosions in Zahedan more than 20 people were killed and over 100 were injured,"

71 killed in Pakistan mosque explosions

Around 3,800 killed in suicide attacks and bombings in three years

Two explosions killed at least 71 people in mosques in Pakistan's northwest on Friday, officials said, after a relative lull in militant violence. In one attack, a suicide bomber blew himself up as Friday prayers were ending, killing at least 66 people, provincial government officials said. The attack occurred in Darra Adam Khel, a suburb of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province capital Peshawar.

So how come none of that happens here?

Arab Terror (and some Good News)

What was obvious in this latest terror attack is that civilians were the prime target.  An Egged bus, a private vehicle.  Victims were shot at close range. 

There was no attempt actually to engage what is usually called "enemy forces" and that is because every single Jew is the enely of the Palestinian national movement.  By his/her very essence as a Jew, he/she is a legitimate target, to be killed, exploded, raped, maimed.

There really is no distinction that can be made between civilian targets and soldiers for two reasons:

a) the soldiers were in an Egged bus and could not have been easily distinguised;

b) moreover, as EH pointed out to me, shooting at a bus of soldiers listening to Ipods is not exactly
engaging them in a battlefield.

Also, consider that the operation, as sophisticated as it was (probablly with Hezbollah training) with the use of several squads with a variety of weapons, was completely suicidal.  There was no way for them to escape.  This highlights the total irrationality of the Arab mindset in this conflict.  There is no logical method to deal with them.

They came to kill, no matter what.  They were not 'soldiers of Islam'.  All of Israel is "occupied" as in this identification of Eilat as "Occupied Om Ar-Rashrash".  It's not 1967 but 1948.  Zionism is evil.

An Almost Terror Attack at the...Pentagon?

One person was taken into custody early Friday in connection with an investigation into a suspicious vehicle near the Pentagon, authorities said.


A backpack was recovered containing four 5-lb bags of ammonium nitrate, spent 9mm shells, and a note saying “al Qaeda Taliban rules.”

Countering Hamas

You probably think Israel planned this:

...a secret plan for a wide-ranging crackdown on the Islamist movement Hamas...asked for the internment of leaders and activists, the closure of radio stations and the replacement of imams in mosques.

But no, it was Britain.

The fuller story:

British intelligence helped draw up a secret plan for a wide-ranging crackdown on the Islamist movement Hamas which became a security blueprint for the Palestinian Authority, leaked documents reveal. The plan asked for the internment of leaders and activists, the closure of radio stations and the replacement of imams in mosques.

The disclosure of the British plan, drawn up by the intelligence service in conjunction with Whitehall officials in 2004, and passed by a Jerusalem-based MI6 officer to the senior PA security official at the time, Jibril Rajoub, is contained in the cache of confidential documents obtained by al-Jazeera TV and shared with the Guardian. The documents also highlight the intimate level of military and security cooperation between Palestinian and Israeli forces.

The bulk of the British plan has since been carried out by the West Bank-based PA security apparatus which is increasingly criticised for authoritarian rule and human rights abuses, including detention without trial and torture.

The British documents, which have been independently authenticated by the Guardian, included detailed proposals for a security taskforce based on the UK's "trusted" Palestinian Authority contacts, outside the control of "traditional security chiefs", with "direct lines" to Israel intelligence.

It lists suicide bombers and rockets as issues that need urgent attention.

Under the heading "Degrading the capabilities of the rejectionists", the MI6 Palestinian Security Plan recommends "the detention of key middle-ranking officers" of Hamas and other armed groups, adding: "We could also explore the temporary internment of leading Hamas and PIJ [Palestinian Islamic Jihad] figures, making sure they are well-treated, with EU funding."

A Harry Potter actress fled her home after her father and brother threatened to kill her for going out with a Hindu man, a court heard yesterday.

Afshan Azad, 22, who appeared in the blockbuster movies as Padma Patil, was attacked and branded a ‘slag’ when Muslim relatives found out about her boyfriend.
The actress was so scared that she escaped out of her bedroom window and later fled her home city.

Police were called and her father, Abul Azad, 54, and brother, Ashraf, 28, were arrested and charged with making threats to kill her. The actress’s brother was also charged with assault. But Miss Azad refused to testify and yesterday failed to turn up at their trial at Manchester Crown Court...

But perhaps her experience with magic did assist in her defenstration moves.

Antonio Martinez, 21, a U.S. citizen who recently converted to Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Hussain, declared on his Facebook page that he hates "Any 1 who opposes Allah." Those kinds of postings, brought to the FBI's attention, sparked an intensive investigation involving an undercover agent, a secret informant and a chilling plot to kill military personnel in the United States because they were killing Muslims overseas, according to an FBI affidavit filed Wednesday.

Martinez was so intent on carrying out the attack on the Catonsville recruiting station that he approached at least three people to join in what he saw as his mission, court papers say. Another - whom Martinez knew as his "Afghani brother" - was actually an undercover FBI agent.

Now, you tell me, that ain't crazy?

The British exhibition even had the subtitle “Discover What We Share.” And in New York, too, the emphasis throughout is on commonality. At this historical moment, this is meant to defend Islam against anticipated accusations. Thus: out of three distinct monotheisms, one humanist perspective. This argument deserves more analysis

Terrorists Can't Spell

You all remember this picture, right?

Well, it seems that it is not only antisemites that can't spell, but terrorists, too:

...Carlos Almonte, the wannabe New Jersey Jihadist arrested last week on his way to Somalia, was previously Internet famous for his funny sign.

Feds say 24 year-old Carlos Almonte and his buddy Hamoud Alessa weight-lifted and played paintball in suburban New Jersey to train for violent Jihad...But Carlos Almonte was also skilled at being laughed at by the Internet. According to the New York Times, Almonte appeared at a protest in 2008 "holding a sign saying "DEATH TO ALL JUICE," with the word "ZIONIST" written faintly above "JUICE."

Someone took a picture of this and it soon became a funny Internet meme, complete with its own Failblog entry. Who knows if Almonte was in on the joke. The fact he posted it on his Facebook picture suggests yes. The fact that his former boss said ""This kid is not smart," suggests no. What's important is that terrorist groups are clearly intent on developing their abilities to "go viral".

Islam, Naziism and Liberals

Jeffrey Herf authored "Nazi Propaganda for the Arab World", and is professor of modern European history at the University of Maryland in College Park.:

“liberals should be willing to devote more efforts to the moral and political delegitimation of radical Islamism. It is a form of totalitarian ideology. It is profoundly reactionary and deeply anti-Semitic and, in this sense, racist. It draws on a radicalization and selective reading of the religion of Islam. During both World War II and the cold war, the United States derived great strategic value from naming its adversaries and publicly discussing and denouncing their ideologies. It fought wars of ideas that accompanied the force of arms. We need to understand the importance of doing that today as well.”

and this, to explain why and its historical roots:

During World War II, American diplomats in the U.S. Embassy in Cairo documented the fusion of Nazism and political Islam, as expressed in Arabic-language shortwave radio broadcasts aimed at the Middle East. The broadcasts were the product of collaboration between officials in the German foreign ministry and the pro-Nazi Arab and Muslim collaborators, including Haj Amin El Husseini, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Three elements of these Nazi appeals are of particular importance. First, they offered a secular form of anti-imperialism aimed against British presence in the region and against Zionist goals in Palestine. Second, German foreign ministry officials concluded that the most effective way to fan anti-Americanism in the region was to associate the United States and President Roosevelt in particular, with the Jews and with Zionism. Third, the Arabic-language propaganda made explicit appeals to Muslims as Muslims, that is, as believers in the religion of Islam. The Nazi officials and their Arab and Islamist collaborators agreed that a particular reading of passages from the Koran offered the key point of entry to a very hard-to-ascertain number of Muslim hearts and minds.

The alliance between the Nazis and the Arab and Islamist collaborators in wartime Berlin was not simply one of convenience based on the principle that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Rather, collaboration rested just as much on shared values, namely rejection of liberal democracy and, above all, hatred of the Jews and of Zionist aspirations. Though the meeting of hearts and minds in wartime Berlin was relatively short, it was an important chapter in the much longer history of political Islamism. It was there that a cultural fusion of Nazism and political Islamism took place. Husseini’s ideological contribution was to offer a religious foundation for hatred of the Jews as Jews, and for a rejection of Zionism.
