In recent years, Islam has played an increasingly important role in the discourse of the Fatah movement. This phenomenon is not a new one but rather one that has historical roots. This article explores the Islamic background of the Fatah founding fathers and suggests that the appreciation of their social background and their early military and political experience is crucial to the understanding of later developments in the movement. The article also analyzes the adoption of the armed struggle ideology and its connection to Islam as a means for strengthening public support in Fatah.

From the moment it was established, the "armed struggle" was at the heart of the movement's ideology. The objective of that strategy was to mobilize the masses for the revolution that was to "bring them back to the lost paradise" of pre-1948 Palestine as was often written in the movement's scripts.

Fatah perceives the revolution as a key instrument for creating a new future for the Palestinian people. This is by no means a Marxist-style revolution that strives to eliminate the old socio-political order. Although the term revolution was constantly used, its full meaning remained undefined to the masses.

It should be noted that in the revolutionary discourse of the movement, Islam held and still holds great significance. According to current research about Fatah, the terms "revolution" and "armed struggle" have been used as synonyms. This makes it easier to place these terms in a wider linguistic context which can refer to both national and religious identities.

One could expect that some tension would exist between national and religious identities. However, the two can also coexist. Islam was utilized as an instrument for creating a system of symbols and images. This imagined system combined with the national struggle would fuse the Palestinian past and present, and pave the way to an ideal future. Fatah presents Islam as part of its national character. Religion, integrated as a sacred symbol into the national culture values, provides a tangible expression to the masses’ state of mind. It also provides a moral system that relates to the supreme political objective of liberation and the achievement of independence.

"The Al-Aqsa [Mosque] is ours... and they have no right to defile it with their filthy feet. We will not allow them to, and we will do everything in our power to protect Jerusalem."

He was repeating an earlier canard officially promoted by the Palestinian Authority:

Then, it - you should pardon the expression - spread.

As far as to ... Canada:-

Ayman Elkasrawy, a teaching assistant at Ryerson University who in a sermon preached “purify the al-Aqsa Mosque from the filth of the Jews,” has been dismissed by the university.
In a letter to B’nai Brith Canada, Ryerson President Mohamed Lachemi noted that Elkasrawy was “no longer employed by the university,” and added that “we remain actively engaged in addressing antisemitism in our community.” B’nai Brith had sent a letter demanding that Elkasrawy be fired on Feb. 21.Elkasrawy, who worked within Ryerson’s Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, delivered his inflammatory supplications at the Masjid Toronto in June of 2016. The mosque later issued an apology for his remarks.

Thinking those thoughts and pronouncing them and teaching them is just, well, filth.

Muslims accuse Jews of 'storming' the Temple Mount, what they refer to as the Haram A-Sharif, site of the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

But now, look who is storming now:

ISIS strikes holy site    ...In Qatif in eastern Saudi Arabia, a suicide bomber attempted to launch an attack at a Shiite mosque but failed, killing himself in the process, according to an official with knowledge of the event. There were no injuries.

Such a mixed-up, crazy world.

Breastfeeding, the Temple Mount and Islam

As noted here, 

The Palestinian Authority minister of religious affairs warned on Sunday that rabbis had permitted Jewish women to breastfeed on the Temple Mount

Why a warning?

After all, it is written in the Quran, 2:233:

Mothers may breastfeed their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]. Upon the father is the mothers' provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable. No person is charged with more than his capacity. No mother should be harmed through her child, and no father through his child. 

Breastfeeding can be a delicate subject for Muslims.  A few years ago, the BBC reported on this scandal:

One of Sunni Islam's most prestigious institutions is to discipline a cleric after he issued a decree allowing women to breastfeed their male colleagues.  Dr Izzat Atiya of Egypt's al-Azhar University said it offered a way around segregation of the sexes at work.  His fatwa stated the act would make the man symbolically related to the woman and preclude any sexual relations.

The president of al-Azhar denounced the fatwa, which Dr Atiya has since retracted, as defamatory to Islam...Atiya, the head of al-Azhar's Department of Hadith, said...if a woman fed a male colleague "directly from her breast" at least five times they would establish a family bond and thus be allowed to be alone together at work.

"Breast feeding an adult puts an end to the problem of the private meeting, and does not ban marriage," he ruled.

"A woman at work can take off the veil or reveal her hair in front of someone whom she breastfed."

There have been other similar declarations in favor of such an arrangement, although many suggest that the woman first extract the milk herself before providing the male with her breast milk.

Last November, there was an incident when a Jewish woman was mercilessly removed for attempting to suckle her infant.

What is the problem?  How intolerant can the Waqf and PA officials be, even within the framework of their own religious instructions?

K'ab Al-Ahbar

K'ab Al-Ahbar.  Ka'b. Ka'ab.

He converted to Islam.

But he was originally Jewish.

Yakub ben Shallum was a scholar, and he was educated in Pumbedita. He continued to follow Rabbinic tradition such that later Islamic historians questioned whether he ever "converted" to Islam. Yaakov was known as Ka'b Ibn Mati' Al-Himyari, also nicknamed Abu Ishaq, from the clan of Dhu Ru'ayn came to Medina during the time of 'Umar. He was a prominent Rabbi and became known as Ka'b Al-Ahbar. He declared his Islam and resided in Medina during 'Umar's reign. He stayed in Medina until the days of 'Uthman. 

He was a Jew, a native of Yemen. His complete name was Abu Isḥaḳ Ka'b b. Mati' b. Haisu (Hosea ?).   On account of his theological learning he was styled "Al-Ḥibr" or "Al-Aḥbar," which is an adaptation of the Hebrew "ḥaber."  He brought much of the Isrāʾīliyāt (things Jewish) into Islamic tradition.  He was said to have declared: "I would rather fornicate thrity-three times than consume a dirham of usury while Allâh knows that I knowingly consumed it as usury".   He accompanied the Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab during his conquest of Al Quds (Jerusalem) in the year 638 AD and was the Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab's counselor and advisor on the holy sites of Al Quds (Jerusalem).

But his fame is related to the Temple Mount:

...Ka'b was with Khalif 'Umar when he entered Jerusalem...In 642CE...'Umar he summoned Yaakov (Ka’b al-Ahbar) to find his thoughts on the matter...[of] "Where do you think better to build the musalla, oratory? " Ka’b replied: "Beside the rock". In another narration: "If you seek my advice, I prefer to pray behind the rock, i.e. the rock would be the qiblah."

'Umar said: "O Jewish person [son of a Jewish woman], you are mixing your Jewishness [with Islam]. I shall build it at the forefront of the mosque, as to us belong the forefronts of the mosques, and I saw you and the way you took off your shoes." He said: "I liked to conduct [be in contact with] it with my foot."

'Umar observed that Ka'b took off his shoes. This was not in accordance with Rabbinic custom [Zohar, Parshas Balak], rather Islamic – specifically Khawarji – custom...He also appeared that he was requesting that the qiblah be changed back to Jerusalem.

When 'Umar started to make repairs on the Bayt al-Maqdis, Temple Mount [!], from the trash which the Romans buried it in, 'Umar heard the takbir, God is Greater, announced from behind him. 'Umar was averse to evil do anything of showy false piety. He said: What is this? They replied: Ka’b said God is Greater and people repeated after him. 'Umar said: Bring him here. Ka’b said: O Amir al-Mu’minin, a prophet foretold of what you did today five hundred years ago. He asked: How is that? He replied: The Romans attacked Banu Israel and buried it (Bayt al-Maqdis), till you were appointed a ruler, when Allah delegated a prophet over the sweepings who said: O Jerusalem, I have good tidings for you, al-Faruq, has come to cleanse you of that which inside you...

This Haddith seems to show Yaakov's true intentions. Perhaps with the liberation of Jerusalem by the Muslims, Yaakov began to be interested for the first time in mixing Judaism and Islam to push Muslims to achieve "Jewish goals", as it says "take vengeance .. upon the Romans". This is exactly what happened in 614 CE during the Persian conquest of Jerusalem. The Jews & Persians took vengeance on the Romans and it is said that several tens of thousands of Christians died. This turned the war against the Persians and brought about the fall of the Persian empire. So it obviously would have been unwise for 'Umar to take up this cause. 'Umar ordered Jews removed from Masjid al-Aqsa to a synagogue outside the Temple Mount, outside its south western corner...

...Islamic histories mention that around this time Abu Dharr, a strict ascetic, became incensed upon hearing Ka'b giving verdicts in Islamic law. Yaakov had justified 'Uthman's withholding State funds from being distributed to the poor. Abu Dharr struck and perhaps killed Yaakov with his rod, saying "Son of a Jewish lady, are you trying to teach us our religion?" (His age at death is recorded as "exceeding 100 years of age").

So, there is a Temple Mount according to Islamic history.  And Jews prayed therein (or adjacent).  And Muslims did ban Jews from doing so.  And Muslims never forgave his Jewish origin.

He also teaches us that understanding these fantasies is an essential part of understanding these transgressive events.

Najis?

In Islamic law, najis are things or persons regarded as ritually unclean. According to Islam, there are two kinds of najis: the essential najis which cannot be cleaned and the unessential najis which become najis while in contact with another najis.  Contact with najis things brings a Muslim into a state of ritual impurity (in opposition to ṭahārah, ritual purity).

Similarly, Ghulat who believe in any of the holy twelve Imams as God, or that they are incarnations of God, and Khawarij and Nawasib who express enmity towards th e holy Imams, are also najis. And similar is the case of those who deny Prophethood, or any of the necessary laws of Islam, like, namaz and fasting, which are believed by the Muslims as a part of Islam, and which they also know as such. As regards the people of the Book (i.e. the Jews and the Christians) who do not accept the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad bin Abdullah (Peace be upon him and his progeny), they are commonly considered najis, but it is not improbable that they are Pak. Ho wever, it is better to avoid them.

108. The entire body of a Kafir, including his hair and nails, and all liquid substances of his body, are najis.

109. If the parents, paternal grandmother and paternal grandfather of a minor child are all kafir, that child is najis, except when he is intelligent enough, and professes Islam. When, even one person from his parents or grandparents is a Muslim, the child is Pak (The details will be explained in rule 217)...

Heard of Dajjal?

Excerpt from a book review:

In 1941, a Harvard University anthropology professor named Carleton S. Coon traveled to Morocco, ostensibly to carry out field research. His true mission was to smuggle weapons to anti-German rebels in the Atlas Mountains, on behalf of the Office of Strategic Services, the wartime precursor to the CIA. The following year, as the United States prepared to invade North Africa, Coon and an OSS colleague, Gordon Brown, drafted propaganda pamphlets intended to soften up local reaction to the coming swarms of GIs. They settled on a religious idiom: “Praise be unto the only God…. The American Holy Warriors have arrived…to fight the great Jihad of Freedom.” The pamphlet was signed “Roosevelt.”

Nazi Germany’s leaders also harbored half-baked ideas about messaging to North Africa’s Muslims. Heinrich Himmler was the Third Reich’s most influential advocate of the instrumental use of Islam in war strategy. In the spring of 1943, as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s army in North Africa stumbled to defeat, Himmler asked the Reich Security Head Office “to find out which passages of the Qur’an provide Muslims with the basis for the opinion that the Führer has already been forecast in the Qur’an and that he has been authorized to complete the work of the Prophet.”

Ernst Kaltenbrunner of the Head Office replied with the disappointing news that the Koran had no suitable passages for such a claim, but he suggested that Hitler might be advertised as “the returned ‘Isa (Jesus), who is forecast in the Qur’an and who, similar to the figure of the Knight George, defeats the giant and Jew-King Dajjal at the end of the world.” Ultimately, the office printed one million copies of an Arabic-language pamphlet that sought to persuade Muslim Arabs to ally with Germany:

O Arabs, do you see that the time of the Dajjal has come? Do you recognize him, the fat, curly-haired Jew who deceives and rules the whole world and who steals the land of the Arabs?… O Arabs, do you know the servant of God? He [Hitler] has already appeared in the world and already turned his lance against the Dajjal and his allies…. He will kill the Dajjal, as it is written, destroy his places and cast his allies into hell. 

Dajjal?

Here:

Dajjāl i...a common Arabic word (دجال) whose root is dajl meaning "lie" or "deception". Al-Masīḥ ad-Dajjāl, with the definite article al- ("the"), refers to "the deceiving Messiah", a specific end-of times deceiver. The Dajjāl is an evil being who will seek to impersonate the true Messiah.
...According to hadith, Muhammad is said to have prophesied that the Masih ad-Dajjal would be the last of a series of thirty Dajjal or "deceivers" (false prophets).
Muhammad is reported to have said:
...Ad-Dajjal is blind in the right eye and his eye looks like a bulging out grape...Narrated Ibn Umar: Once Allah's Apostle stood amongst the people, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved. Then, mentioning Dajjal, he said, "I warn you against him (i.e. the Dajjal) and there was no prophet but warned his nation against him. No doubt, Noah warned his nation against him but I tell you about him something of which no prophet told his nation before me. You should know that he is one-eyed, and Allah is not one-eyed."... the Dajjal will gather an army of 70,000 Jews from Isfahan, of those he has deceived and lead them in a war against Jesus who shall be accompanied by an army of the righteous, along with Imam Mahdi.

It gets weird:

Muslims sages say the Dajjal’s campaign of mischief will begin between Syria and Iraq; and that he’ll reign for fourteen months and fourteen days, and have “70,000 Jews from Isfahan (i.e., Iran) wearing Persian shawls, and Bedouins, and illegitimate people carrying blue helmets”, among his first followers. The latter possibly referring to UN peacekeepers who’d endorse his claim that he’s ostensibly a man of oecumenical peace for the war-torn Middle East...Dajjal also means to cover something with another thing more beautiful or precious; which has been interpreted as referring to his role as a deceiver who’ll advocate the Jews’ coming scam of mandatory global e-commerce based on the virtual collateral of Jewish gold.

Muslim sages have also said that ‘those who hear about the Dajjal should stay far from him. By Allah! A person will approach him thinking him to be a believer, and upon seeing his amazing feats [i.e., as an imitator of Israel’s prophet Elijah] he will become his follower.’ While others have said that he’ll have very thick body hair, like an Edomite, and be blind, like Moshe Dayan, in one eye; which can, of course, be reconciled with the biblical verse that says: ‘the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.’

And weirder:

Based on various Islamic traditions, Muslims believe that the Dajjal will be Jewish.  The title of a book by Muslim author Matloob Ahmed Qasmi, Emergence of the Dajjal, the Jewish King couldn’t make this point more clearly.  Imam Sheikh Ibrahim Madhi of the Palestinian Authority articulated the Islamic perspective regarding the expectation of the Jewish people quite well in one of his sermons:

The Jews await the false Jewish messiah, while we await, with Allah's help… the Mahdi and Jesus, peace be upon him.  Jesus's pure hands will murder the false Jewish messiah.  Where?  In the city of Lod, in Palestine. Palestine will be, as it was in the past, a graveyard for the invaders 
Samuel Shahid, a Christian Arab scholar in his scholarly study of Islamic eschatology says of the Dajjal that he will be, “the embodiment of the Jewish hope and longing.  The bulk of his army is recruited from the Jews.”

As mentioned in the last chapter, the followers of the Dajjal will primarily consist of Jews and women.  It is mentioned that women are very ignorant and as such are easily misled.  Veliankode states, “Meanwhile, women will also fall to the deviant line of the Antichrist because of their unawareness and ignorance of Islam.”
