How Evil Was The Hebron Massacre?

On August 23, 1929, a Friday, and on the Shabbat, August 24, Arabs from Hebron and surrounding villages attacked the centuries-old Jewish community in the city.  Veteran and recent Jewish residents were slaughtered.

There was murder and rape.

And there was mutilation.

Not for the squeamish.

First They 'Took' Jerusalem, Then They 'Took' Hebron

I fully understand my Hebron friends, from the Prime Minister to the Mayor of Hebron, the Jewish Mayor, that is.

But let us recall, last week's Hebron UNESCO resolution was enabled back in  when the previous Jerusalem-centered resolution passed and also United Nations Security Council resolution 2334 (2016), - thanks to Barack Obama* - and in fact, last Thursday's resolution included this reference before getting to Hebron.

And it detailed this regarding Jerusalem:

30.I Jerusalem

...5. Reminding that all legislative and administrative measures and actions taken by Israel, the occupying Power, which have altered or purport to alter the character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem, and in particular the “basic law” on Jerusalem, are null and void and must be rescinded forthwith,

...7. Regrets the failure of the Israeli occupying authorities to cease the persistent excavations, tunneling, works and projects in East Jerusalem, particularly in and around the Old City of Jerusalem, which are illegal under international law and reiterates its request to Israel, the occupying Power, to prohibit all violations which are not in conformity with the provisions of the relevant UNESCO conventions, resolutions and decisions;

...9. Stresses again the urgent need to implement the UNESCO reactive monitoring mission to the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls, and invites the Director-General and the World Heritage Centre, to exert all possible efforts, in line with their mandates and in conformity with the provisions of the relevant UNESCO conventions, decisions and resolutions, to ensure the prompt implementation of the mission and, in case of non-implementation, to propose possible effective measures to ensure its implementation;

Letting UNESCO getting away with that, not consistently following up and demanding some sort of a recall process, led straight to Hebron.

They Are Rabbis, Yes?

From a description of a tour of American Rabbis, via T'ruah, in Hebron:

Hebron is the only Palestinian city in the West Bank that has an Israeli settlement located within it. A total of about 850 Israelis (including about 200 yeshiva students, who are not full-time residents) live here among 200,000 Palestinians – among them, some of the most radical and violent settlers to have emerged during a half-century of occupation. To make sure that the city's tiny Jewish population is protected, hundreds of Israeli soldiers patrol the streets here. But even this very conspicuous military presence is not enough, as the rabbis on the tour soon learn. To avoid friction between the two hostile populations, Israel has imposed heavy restrictions on the movement of Palestinian residents in what used to be bustling downtown Hebron.

I hope those Rabbis know that that is the situation the Palestinian Authority agreed to.

And that Hebron has possessed a Jewish population for many centuries - except when Arabs killed them and raped them and kicked them out, temporarily, of course.

And that Hebron was where David's monarchy began, a political entity that predated an Arab institution of any type of rule by, er, centuries.

And that Hebron is the home of the Jewish Patriarchs and Matriarchs.

And that the Bible made an extra effort to note it was purchased, not conquered, stolen, or otherwise illegally occupied.

They are Rabbis, yes?

Oh, and that "to avoid friction" bit?  Did the writer intend to convey a disguised neutered description of Arab/Islamic terror? Sniping at infants? Throwing hand grenades at and splaying with machine-gun fire worshipers singing and dancing returning from Friday night prayers? Stabbings by Arab females?

In short, he and his friends

-  squatted on property an Arab claims is his (but it isn't and that's another part of the
    so-called 'occupation' tale)

-  and they "helped" him by ripping up all his weeds - which is the fodder for his goats and 
    thus deprived him of food for his livestock

-  and then they conducted a sit down which got their Israeli counterparts arrested, but
    when they left, theIsraeli were still in jail while they were off to lunch

-  all there while they were singing civil rights songs.

What a buffoon.

I don’t think protests like last Friday’s will have a direct impact on Israelis. The protests are too American.

I’ll never forget last Friday afternoon, when we stood outside the settlement that housed the prison where Rothman-Zecher and five other activists had been detained, and welcomed Shabbat by singing Shalom Aleichem and Lecha Dodi. The soldiers and settlers standing in front of us looked at us like we were mad. The Palestinians standing behind us looked confused too, but a Palestinian boy, smiling broadly, nonetheless ran over to us with cups of water.   

last Friday, I vowed to come back next year, for the fiftieth anniversary of Israel’s takeover of the West Bank. Instead of 50 Jews, I hope we bring 500. I hope you’re one of them.

In July 2013 Sarah Ali, a pro-Palestinian Canadian activists of Pakistani extraction was deported from Israel for her involvement in attacking an Israeli policewoman in Hebron. She was a volunteer activist in "Youth Against Settlements" (Ma'an News Agency, July 21, 2013). 

She quotes one member as saying

"It's not our way. We at Youth Against Settlements don't throw stones. Not for them. For us."

A NYT/Jodi Ruderon Equivalency

Another NYTimes (im)moral equivalency:

"More than 100 people on each side died in a week of rioting in 1929 over access to the Western Wall below."

"On each side died"?

In 1929, after an incident at the Western Wall during Yom Kippur of 1928, following almost a year of vicious Islamic propaganda, intentional violent attacks of Jewish worshippers, passing donkeys through the small courtyard after opening a doorway in an Arab house, playing clanging Dervish music and more, the Mufti Amin El-Husseini organized murderous riots throughout the country in mid-August 1929.

The number of Jews murdered were 135, some of the victims raped, dissected and otherwise put to a horrible death.  The riots lasted almost three weeks.  A few Arabs were killed, seemingly, in revenge attacks, but the vast majority of the 116 Arabs who "died" were killed in self-defense by Jews but actually mainly by British police and troops while trying to restore order and protect the Jews.

They were murdered.

Slaughtered.

In Jerusalem the Government published a refutation of the rumors that the dead Jews of Hebron had been tortured before they had their throats slit. This made me rush back to that city accompanied by two medical men, Dr. Dantziger and Dr. Ticho. I intended to gather up the severed sexual organs and the cut-off women's breasts we had seen lying scattered over the floor and in the beds. But when we came to Hebron a telephone call from Jerusalem had ordered our access barred to the Slonim house. A heavy guard had been placed before the door. Only then did I recall that I had inadvertently told a fellow newspaperman in Jerusalem about our gruesome discoveries.

A.B. Yehoshua was interviewed on the occasion of his new play and visit to the UK and among other things, we learn

Mr Yehoshua's outlook...He believes passionately in a two-state solution – but also that it is now too late to evacuate the West Bank settlements by force without a "civil war". "The only solution is to give them [the settlers] the possibility to stay as a Jewish minority in a Palestinian state," he says.

Under the Yehoshua plan – a version of which was also floated in the past by Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad – those settlers refusing to leave for compensation would have to become Palestinian citizens wholly subject to the new state's laws...Mr Yehoshua also discussed his ideas with Defence Minister Ehud Barak, who raised the question of what would happen if a Jew was slaughtered in Hebron? Mr Yehoshua pointed out that Israelis have been attacked in Egypt without the peace treaty unraveling. "I said: 'If there are three Jews murdered in Toulouse, do you take your army to Toulouse?'"

So, Hebron is France for him?

An Exclusive Corner of Hebron from the February 23, 2012 issue

To the Editors:

Jonathan Freedland captures the vibrancy of Arab Hebron [“An Exclusive Corner of Hebron,” NYR, February 23], with “its thronging market square” that “brims with life and trade” for 175,000 Arab residents. But he seems greatly troubled by the presence of seven hundred Jews, confined to 3 percent of the city, who require the constant presence of Israeli soldiers to protect them from their hostile neighbors.


Freedland’s discomfort in the tiny Jewish Quarter is palpable. Understandably so, since his “proud Israeli” guide Yehuda [Shaul] is affiliated with Breaking the Silence, an organization founded to gather and publicize testimony from soldiers who vigorously oppose a Jewish presence in Hebron.


Touring the tiny Jewish Quarter the “most shocking” images that Freedland encounters are Stars of David painted on the walls of abandoned Arab shops. Nothing is said about the refusal of the Israeli government to permit Hebron Jews to inhabit abandoned Jewish property or purchase property from willing Arab sellers. He notices a plaque—“a seal of government approval”—on a building inhabited by six Jewish families. But he seems unaware that it commemorates six Jews who were murdered by Arab terrorists as they returned from prayer to celebrate the Jewish Sabbath.


A holy city to Jews for three thousand years, Hebron is where the burial tombs of their patriarchs and matriarchs are located, beneath the splendid stone edifice built by King Herod. Muslims (not, as Freedland writes, “Mameluke, Ottoman, British, and Jordanian rulers”) barred Jews from entry for seven centuries. In 1967, nearly four decades after a horrific Arab pogrom destroyed their community, Jews returned to Hebron.


Freedland embraces Yehuda’s depiction of Hebron as “an intense, distilled version of the wider Israeli occupation.” Hebron can better be understood as the fulfillment of Zionism in the city that rivals Jerusalem in its ancient Jewish sanctity.

Jonathan Freedland replies:

Jerold Auerbach suggests I am troubled by the presence of Jews in Hebron, further attributing that position to Yehuda Shaul and Breaking the Silence. But Shaul is clear that his opposition is not to Jews living in that city, but rather to the apparatus of occupation that sustains their presence. “It’s not about who lives there,” he told me, “but about what system applies there.” As for Breaking the Silence itself, Auerbach’s description is not accurate. The group was founded by IDF veterans to gather testimony from fellow Israeli soldiers who, like them, had served in the occupied territories. It describes its aim succinctly as “to expose the Israeli public to the reality of everyday life” in those territories.


The piece was not an exploration of my views but, for what they’re worth, I see no reason why, in principle at least, a two-state future should not allow Jewish communities to live in Palestine just as Arab communities now live in Israel. The issue, then, is not the Jewish presence in Hebron but rather the Israeli occupation of the city and its impact. [no, the issue is can Jews live, safely and securely, and as Jews in an Arab-dominated area, whether a city or a state.  only Israel can do that]


Auerbach says that the Hebron Jews—who are estimated by the IDF to number 800 to 850—are “confined to 3 percent” of the city. In fact, the Israeli-controlled H2 district accounts for 20 percent of Hebron and there is no formal prohibition on Jewish movement around those parts, save for the Casbah, which, as I reported, is a closed military zone and therefore off-limits—though even that area is accessible to Jews for a few hours on the Sabbath. What’s more, the 3 percent Auerbach refers to is not just any 3 percent, but the heart of historic Hebron, now out of reach of Palestinian Hebronites.


He is right that Jewish purchase of Arab land in the West Bank requires official Israeli permission, a mechanism to allow consideration of the political and security impact of any settlement activity. He is surely not calling for a policy in which all property under Israeli jurisdiction is returned to its original owners: were such a policy applied within pre-1967 Israel, for example, many Palestinians would be able to press claims to homes or villages now inhabited by Israeli Jews. That is an issue I doubt Jerold Auerbach is keen to open.


He suggests I am unaware of the murder of six yeshiva students at Beit Hadassah in 1980 and similar outrages. But the piece makes full reference to the series of terror attacks on Hebron Jews that have played a crucial part in creating the current situation. His insistence on reducing successive and different rulers of Hebron to the single category “Muslims” is revealing but inaccurate. The British were not Muslims, but they maintained the same prohibition on Jewish access to the Tomb of the Patriarchs.


As for the massacre of sixty-seven Jews in 1929, it might be helpful to recall that 435 Jews, over two thirds of the Jewish community in Hebron, were sheltered and saved by their Arab neighbors. As Tom Segev has written in One Palestine Complete (p. 326), “Jewish history records very few cases of a mass rescue of this dimension.” [so, what is unique is the act of salvation?  do we understand that killing Jews is the expected reality?]


Lastly, Auerbach sees Hebron as the fulfillment of Zionism. But if Zionism is the yearning for a Jewish, democratic state then the occupation that makes today’s Jewish presence in Hebron possible constitutes a grave threat to Zionism, endangering the two-state solution that is surely the only guarantor of an Israel that is both Jewish and democratic. [tripe. if there is any hope for democracy for Arabs, it is a coexistence with Israel in any form]

This afternoon (Wednesday), 4.4.12, the Israel Police evacuated the settlers who had inhabited the "Patriarch House" in Hebron. The evacuation was carried out on the orders of Defense Minister Ehud Barak. Defense Minister Barak said afterwards: "I will continue to act in order to maintain the rule of law and democracy while guaranteeing the authority of the State over its citizens."

Defense Minster Barak added that "Any request to acquire the relevant buying permit or any other transactions will be dealt with professionally and impartially, as is the practice. However, we can not allow a situation where unlawful actions are taken to determine or dictate ad-hoc facts to the authorities."

From Temple Mount to Hebron - Who's In Charge?

The news from Hebron is

Residents of the newly populated Machpela House in Hevron received official IDF orders Monday to leave the premises "out of concern for public safety."
"The eviction orders we received this hour speak for themselves," the residents said, "and make it clear that there is no problem with the purchase of the house. The sale is completely 'kosher' and the only thing that bothers [Defense Minister] Ehud Barak is the fact that Jews live in Hevron.

Well, my first reaction is that those amongst our national/religious camp who were hesitant about lobbying on behalf of Jewish rights on the Temple Mount due to issues of sanctity of the location, ignoring the larger matter of what the State of Israel is supposed to be serving - where the courts accepted the State's appeal based on an 'exceptional case' definition made up to solve a delicate concern, in other words, entrance and prayer would cause public disorder if Jews exercised their legal rights (blame the Jews attitude) - are now faced with the result: instead of using the Machpela option (that Jews & Muslims can share the same building and therefore Jews & Muslims could and should share an open-air precinct), - they now face the negative side, if Arabs attack Jews in Hebron at that house, it's the Jews' fault. As for other issues, note:

Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar on Monday condemned the order of evacuation facing settlers in the "Beit Hamachpela" (House of the Patriarchs) apartment building, calling it underhanded and unjustified. Earlier Monday, the IDF ordered the West Bank Hebron settlers to leave an apartment building in their city, called "Beit Hamachpela" (House of the Patriarchs) by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, giving the settlers 24 hours to evacuate the home. "This decision was made even without a hearing demanded by the Prime Minister [Binyamin Netanyahu]," he said. "If the house was purchased legally, there is no justification for evacuating the residents."

So, who is in charge here? P.S. Talking about property, remember that Barak received millions for his penthouse. ^

Who Practices Apartheid?

To the Editor:

Jeffrey Goldberg illuminates the likely appeal of the “The Unmaking of Israel” to an “Upper West Side” liberal mentality (which Goldberg seems to share), and he properly dismisses the malicious canard that Israel is an “apartheid state.” But he misleadingly concludes his review with an anecdote about a Palestinian in Hebron who “lives on a street that he shares with Jewish settlers” but is not a full citizen of Israel. This, Goldberg concludes, “is a situation that cannot go on forever.” But he fails to mention that Jews are not permitted to live in the Palestinian sector of Hebron, home to 120,000 Arabs and governed by the Palestinian Authority — a glaring example of apartheid that Goldberg ignores.

The Palmer "Accident"

From David Wilder of Hebron:-

...The area of the accident is quite prone to rock attacks. Cars are stoned daily, many times in areas known from their vulnerability. Unfortunately, very little, if anything, is done to prevent these attacks. Very high ranking officers, during instructions to lower-level commanders, have been quoted as saying that ‘rock attacks are sufferable.’ In other words, the IDF really doesn’t have any responsibility to stop such attacks or apprehend the terrorists hurling the rocks. The ‘settlers’ can and will just have to live with this reality.

However, lately, our enemies have begun using a new method in their continued attempts to kill Jews. Instead of standing on the side of the road and throwing a rock, they are heaving them from moving cars, coming at you from the opposite direction. They toss a rock out their window, in front of your car, just prior to passing you.

The impact is tremendous. The rock is flying at the speed at which the car was driving. When it impacts with the car moving in the other direction, the force is phenomenal.

I’ve been told of numerous such incidents in recent weeks, in the exact area where the ‘accident’ killing Asher and Yonatan Palmer occurred.

On Friday afternoon, this is exactly what happened. That’s why no one was seen fleeing on foot, because the rock was thrown from a moving vehicle. It hit the windshield, breaking it, hitting Asher in the face, causing him to lose control of the car. The rock was found in the wrecked car. A hole, the type of which caused by a thrown rock, was also identified in the windshield. Yet the police and army climbed up a very high tree, claiming that the ‘accident’ was Asher’s fault. They claimed that the rock entered the car as it flipped over in a rock-bed on the side of the road. All this in an effort to cover up the murder of two Jews by Arabs. According to my sources, the police have already concluded that the ‘accident’ was not an accident, that it was cold-blooded murder; the killing two Jews.

There are other details which have not yet been released, and I’m hesitant to fully publicize them for the moment. Some of Asher’s possessions seemed to be missing and have not yet been found at the scene of the crash. There are also signs of possible additional violence at the site. These details prove, without any doubt, that the accident was Arab terror.

The police, not yet weary of the additional pain they’ve already caused the Palmer family are continuing to torture them; they went to court to obtain an order allowing them to perform an autopsy on the two bodies. Jewish law, excluding unique circumstances, forbids autopsies. However all evidence, including examinations of the bodies, the car, and the scene of the attack are proof enough. Why continue to cause unnecessary suffering?!

The seriousness of this cannot be downplayed. Israeli security forces intentionally attempted to cover-up murder. The implications are mind-boggling. In order to prevent possible ‘disturbances’ between Jews and Arabs as the result of this terror, they killed Asher Palmer twice. First, Arabs killed him. But then Israeli police killed him again, blaming him for his own death, due to reckless driving, and being responsible for killing his one year old son, leaving his widow and family to live with this horrible reality for the rest of their lives...

The "accident" was purposeful from at least the IDF's angle.

Walzer's Waltz

Michael Walzer went to Hebron and blogged it.  He waltzed in with the "Breaking The Silence" guys, the European-funded group.

Just one comment on his piece.

He writes

...Revenge. The last word is the one most commonly scrawled. There was an old Jewish community in Hebron, dating back perhaps as far as the eleventh century, religious, pre-Zionist, and in the early twentieth century entirely disengaged from the Zionist movement. Nonetheless, in the Arab uprising of 1929, sixty-nine Jews were massacred in Hebron, and the community destroyed. After the 1967 war, there was a clamor for return (that’s when the settlement of Kiryat Arba, just outside the city, was established), and then, from the religious Right, a clamor for a re-occupation of the old Jewish neighborhoods near the Tomb of the Patriarchs. It was the zealots of the far Right who led the re-occupation, and they are the ones who have moved on since to a politics of revenge. They have had some help from zealots on the other side—Hebron was, until the separation, the bloodiest place in the occupied territories. Now there is no blood, but the settler kids harass the remaining Arabs, encouraged by their parents and rarely stopped by the army.

Hevron Terrorists Attack Kindergarten

Terrorists in Hevron threw a bottle of acid at a children's kindergarten in Beit Hadassah Sunday morning. No one was injured. IDF troops were searching for the culprits.

Also in Hevron, IDF troops overnight Saturday arrested an Arab who had in his possession a large knife. The suspect was being questioned by security officials.

That was June 19th this year.

There was no blood not because the Arabs are cowed or peaceful or convinced by groups like Breaking the Silence to be non-violent. They still hate and wait and try to use every opportunity to kill Jews.

And last March:

Israeli soldiers foiled an attempted Arab terrorist attack on Jewish visitors on Purim in Hevron Sunday. The terrorist, described as being in his 20s, was carrying a three-inch knife when arrested, and he admitted to security officials that he intended to stab Jews at the Cave of the Patriarchs (Ma’arat HaMachpelah).

So much for Walzer.

The Waqf Has A Religion Problem

WAFA Via IMRA:-

Hebron WAFA - ...The director of the Waqf al-Khalil Zaid Al-Jabari, told WAFA, 'The Israeli occupation authorities prevented the calling for prayer in the Ibrahimi Mosque 68 and time for prayer, claiming inconvenience the settlers who are in the occupied part of the Haram al-Sharif'.

Jabari denoubced these arbitrary actions that affect the houses of worship, and considered it 'an encroachment on the divine religions, and
freedom of worship guaranteed by laws and international laws', stressing the deliberate policy of programmed step to escalate Israel, in order to tighten control and control all pillars of the Temple of the ears, and restorations'.

He stressed that the Haram al-Ibrahimi Mosque is exclusively a Palestinian Islamic affair and Jews have no right to intervene.

Really? No right?

The Cave of Machpelah is the world's most ancient Jewish site and the second holiest place for the Jewish people, after Temple Mount in Jerusalem. The cave and the adjoining field were purchased—at full market price—by Abraham some 3700 years ago. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah are all later buried in the same Cave of Machpelah. These are considered the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Jewish people. The only one who is missing is Rachel, who was buried near Bethlehem where she died in childbirth.

The double cave, a mystery of thousands of years, was uncovered several years ago beneath the massive building, revealing artifacts from the Early Israelite Period (some 30 centuries ago). The structure was built during the Second Temple Period (about two thousand years ago) by Herod, King of Judea, providing a place for gatherings and Jewish prayers at the graves of the Patriarchs.

TIPH also has a problem, in writing:

which reads as if the Jews were never a majority in Hebron. A bit biased, that. And wrong.

and home to revered religious sites to which all but a few Christian travelers were forbidden access, and of secondary importance to European Christian institutions in “the Holy Land.”

So, among other inanities, "Zionist immigration" means for her only after, what, 1897? But practical Zionism began with the Bilu in 1881. Before that there were the waves of the pupils of the Gaon of Vilna begining in 1809. Waves of immigrating Hassidim beginning in 1777. What of the 1740 messianic fervors. Of the 1666 Shabtai Tzvi false messianic expectations? The early 16th century exiles from Spain?

Does she know any history of the region?

And you'll note the complete fractionalization of a (non-existing) Arab Palestinian social identity in this phrase: "little involvement with the northern, central, or coastal regions of Palestine".  There was no "Palestinian people" or "nation".

And she fails to mention Jewish religious elements or that Jews were residents of the city of Hebron but couldn't ascend past the 7th step of the Cave of the Patriarchs.

This isn't academic research but mobilized propaganda.

Dumb Stalinist Lefties Rant About Hebron Visits

...Equally outrageous, however, is the claim that visiting Machpela educates against tolerance and coexistence. Admittedly, Jewish-Arab tensions run high in Hebron, though “the occupation” is hardly the sole culprit: even before Israel was founded, Arab Hebronites periodically massacred their Jewish neighbors (see, for instance, 1929 and 1936).

But Machpela itself is an unparalleled example of coexistence: the only holy site in the world that is simultaneously an active synagogue and an active mosque. Usually, it’s open to Jewish and Muslim worshippers alike; on a handful of Jewish and Muslim holidays, it’s reserved for members of the celebrating faith. True, there is no intermingling; Jews and Muslims are kept separate for their mutual protection. Yet both can worship freely at their shared holy site.

Contrast this with the situation on the Temple Mount, where Israel abdicated control to the Muslim religious authorities. Jews and Christians are strictly forbidden to pray on the Mount; they can’t even open a Bible or move their lips in silent prayer. If they do, they are immediately thrown out. Nor can Jews even visit freely: only a few at a time are allowed in.

And perhaps that’s why the left is so upset: visiting Machpela might give students the idea that while Jewish control protects both Jewish and Muslim freedom of worship, Muslim control protects only the latter. Worse, it might give them the idea that leftists care only about Muslim rights, not Jewish ones: after all, they applaud the ban on Jewish worship on the Mount, yet are outraged by the Israeli-enforced freedom of worship at Machpela.
