Need A reason for Separate-Seating on Buses?

Mixed-gender seating can be problematic.

Hareidi Jews prefer separate. In New York, too.

And for breast-feeding mothers, it is easier, like in the Phillipines.

But if you need a practical reason to prefer mixed-seating here's one:

A Pennsylvania couple is facing an assortment of criminal charges for having sex on a city bus, carnal activity that was captured by the vehicle’s surveillance camera.

According to a police criminal complaint, Amanda Confer, 24, boarded the bus on a Friday afternoon in late-August...Also riding the bus through Montoursville that day were “Pre-release inmates” Randell Peterson and Joshua Schill. The men were part of a work release program...

Investigators allege that Confer and Peterson, 32, sat next to each other in the rear of the bus, with Schill sitting in front of them. Before the illicit action commenced, however, Confer “turned over her infant daughter” to Schill, who apparently served as babysitter/lookout during the subsequent rendezvous.

...Confer “lowered her underwear” and, “upon sitting on” Peterson’s lap, “both defendants proceeded to have sexual intercourse for several minutes.”

Shortly after the tryst ended, Peterson and Schill exited the bus together, while Confer continued to ride on with her daughter.

...Confer and Peterson were charged earlier this month with conspiracy, indecent exposure, open lewdness, and disorderly conduct. They are scheduled for a November 4 preliminary hearing in Magisterial District Court.

Solution to Hareidi Antipathy to Mixed Public Transportation

I have been following the incidents of violence emanating from Hareidi quarters in Jerusalem and Bet Shemesh coming from men who can't tolerated mixed-seating or even women sitting in the front of the bus. My wife has blogged about it, too.

Anway, here's one possible solution:

Seoul subway to reintroduce women-only cars

SEOUL (AFP) — Women-only subway carriages will be reintroduced in South Korea's capital to try to curb sexual harassment of female passengers, officials said Wednesday.

Operators of Seoul's eight subway lines introduced women-only carriages in 1992, but the system was suspended just months later due to "structural problems in operations," a Seoul Metro spokesman told AFP.

"Previously, it had been impossible to stop male passengers from using women-only carriages during the rush hour," he said.

Subway authorities plan next year to designate two carriages of each train exclusively for women, he said.

As I have friends in Seoul (a Jewish chaplain and his wife), maybe I can get an on-the-scene report.

Will this suffice for our Jewesses or will they insist on full rights?

Alleged

Proper and correct English is a always a good thing. However, English can also be used in a number of ways.

Take for example, this excerpt from Jonathan Rosenblum's op-ed, "Knowing our Limits" in the Mishpacha magazine:-

A group of five feminists, including novelist Naomi Ragen, has petitioned BaGaTz against the Mehadrin lines maintained by two publicly-subsidized bus companies: Egged and Dan. Petitioner do not demand the immediate cessation of Mehadrin service, but rather that the Court order the Transport Ministry to conduct a study of the necessity of separate seating bus lines and require Mehadrin buses to be clearly labeled.

At the hearing before BaGaTz, a good deal of attention is likely to focus on an incident that took place on the number 2 bus between Har Nof and the Kotel last November 24. In a widely circulated Email, Mrs. Miriam Shear, an Orthodox grandmother from Toronto described an alleged attack on her that day.

Since there has been no court decision in this matter of the attack, it is, truthfully, alleged.

Nevertheless, I do think it would have been better to have written "what Mrs. Shear alleged to have happened...".

What's the difference you ask?

Well, in my phrasing, it is clear that Mrs. Shear is the one doing the alleging and that there was an incident but perhaps not all the details are clear. In Jonathan's version, it is as if the who incident really didn't occur.

The difference is minor but the conclusions could be major.
