Eglin: Bikini-clad woman, American flag inappropriate
FORT WALTON BEACH - A billboard on Martin Luther King Boulevard that sports a curvy torso and the American flag is definitely an attention grabber. "It made me look," James Kilpatrick said Tuesday as he pumped gas at a convenience store near Hurlburt Field's back gate.
The advertisement for Destin Plastic Surgery depicts a bikini-clad woman against an American flag backdrop with the phrase "We Support Our Troops."
"I'm sort of shocked people would find it distasteful," said Dr. William Burden of Destin Plastic Surgery. "We live in a beach town. It's not like it's something we don't see all the time here."
Beach town or not, the ad was pulled from the advertising lineup of the Eglin Dispatch, one of Freedom Communications' weekly military publications. "The general consensus was the ad might be considered offensive by some of the readers and it did not reflect the proper respect for the flag," said Lois Walsh, a spokeswoman for Eglin Air Force Base.
