Media Coverage?

Now, think back over the past two weeks and ask yourselves, how many headlines and stories and pictures have you observed in/on your news media outlets about this, their prominence, their emphasis and their repetativeness and how many about "harassed Pals."?

a public meeting in the Du Noon slum area 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of central Cape Town degenerated into violence. "Groups within the crowd started to loot shops owned by Zimbabweans and other foreigners," he told AFP, saying it was the first such incident in the city.

"Some people were assaulted, but mostly shops were looted."

About 500 immigrants fled the area fearing attack and these people were being cared for in community centres in the city, he said.

More than 40 people have been killed since violence began in Johannesburg more than 10 days ago, with 16,000 displaced and 500 arrested.

At least 56 people have been killed and nearly 50,000 foreigners forced from their homes in a wave of attacks by South Africans who accuse them of taking jobs and being responsible for crime.

Hlangwani Mulaudzi, a government spokesman, said officials were still identifying land and finalizing logistical details.

However, he said the government does not want the shelters to be "labeled as refugee camps" and hopes all those displaced eventually will be integrated back into their communities.

"In total, at 6am (1400 AEST) on Thursday morning, we had 62 dead people and 670 injured," national police spokeswoman Sally de Beer told AFP after more than two weeks of violence.

"Some of the people that were injured died in hospital," she added.
