UNESCO Paralleled in 1939 Caricature

On May 17, 1939, the White Paper policy for the Palestine Mandate was announced and a week later, it passed a vote in Parliament:

Question put, "That this House approves the policy of His Majesty's Government relating to Palestine as set out in Command Paper No. 6019."

The House divided: Ayes, 268; Noes, 179

Davar newspaper of May 25 carried this caricature:

A book [White Paper] for a book [the Bible].

P.S.

SF sent me this:

The white paper was also a breach of the terms of the League of Nations Mandate and identified as such by the League of Nations Permanent Mandate Commission in their report ( p2 attached) of June 1939.

The Mandatory’s new statement of policy was examined by the Permanent Mandates Commission at their thirty-sixth session in June, 1939. the commission reported that:
“the policy set out in the White Paper was not in accordance with the interpretation which, in agreement with the Mandatory Power and the Council, the Commission had always placed upon the Palestine Mandate.”

They went on to consider whether the Mandate was open to a new interpretation with which the White Paper would not be at variance. Four of the seven members
“did not feel able to state that the policy of the White Paper was in conformity with the Mandate, any contrary conclusion appearing to them to be ruled out by the very terms of the Mandate and by the fundamental intentions of its authors.”

The other three members “were unable to share this opinion; they consider that existing circumstances would justify the policy of the White Paper, provided the Council did not oppose it.”

I Hope You Are Not Hypocritical, Rabbi Wernick

The CEO of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Rabbi Steven C. Wernick writes:

What’s the big deal about Israeli and Diaspora Jews, including myself, deciding to join with Women of the Wall on Wednesday to exercise our right to pray and read Torah in a women's prayer service at the Western Wall and in a mixed prayer service in the Western Wall plaza?

The big deal is that, as part of the thousands-year journey of the Jewish people, we turn east when we pray, no matter our geography.  Jerusalem, the Kotel and the Temple Mount mean for us what they mean for all Jews – hope.  Hope that tomorrow will be better than today.  Hope that Jewish wandering and persecution will end.  Hope that we will again lihiyot am hofshi b'artzeinu - be a free people in our ancestral homeland.  Hope that redemption will be at hand and the Jewish People will be given an opportunity, through a Jewish state, to practice the ideals, values, belief and traditions that have not only ensured our survival, but have nurtured our thriving.

"Hope"?

But, God forbid, not hoping for the reconstructing of the Temple and revitalizing the Temple service, correct?

And no breaking in to the Temple Mount with Torah scrolls to pray in an egalitarian minyan there, correct?

And no criticism of Islamic fundamentalism in harming Jews who do not pray (due to the status quo restrictions which you do not protest)?

Or do you?

Do you follow this Conservative permission to enter?

Rabbi Wernick, you have learned this in Tractate Sotah, for sure:

אמר לה ינאי מלכא לדביתיה: אל תתיראי מן הפרושין ולא ממי שאינן פרושין אלא מן הצבועין. שדומין לפרושין שמעשיהן כמעשה זמרי ומבקשין שכר כפנחס
King Jannai said to his wife', 'Fear not the Pharisees and those who are not Pharisees but the hypocrites who ape the Pharisees; because their deeds are the deeds of Zimri  but they expect a reward like Pinchas'.

I hope you are not hypocritical.

Jewish identity in an active fashion within the Temple Mount is a civil rights issue, is a lawful one, actually, but is limited by government policy and judicial weakness.

We could use your support: vocal, lobbying.

Or maybe you and your fellow activists would join a break-in with Torah scrolls?

P.S.

You also wrote:

The Prime Minister asked us to wait.  We've waited 2,000 years for a return to Jerusalem, to the Kotel.

And?  And to?

And to the Temple Mount.

Even Naomi Shemer wrote that in "Jerusalem of Gold".

And no one frequents the Temple Mount
In the Old City...
We have returned...
A (shofar) calls out on the Temple Mount
In the Old City.

And you added, too:

The Kotel belongs to all of the Jewish people - in all of our diversity.

You can be in all your diversity.  But a national monument, not to mention a religious one, is not altered to fit each and every diversity. Extra space can always be made but why do you demand to alter what has existed for centuries, by people who come daily, every day, every hour, which is, at least as regards the WOWers, once a month for an hour?  Is that a fair demand?  One to act in a direct action way?  And to ignore other Jews' own diversity?

Quick Fisk of "Britain & Palestine"

The anti-Zionist "Balfour Project" site - they assert that there was a ‘sacred trust’of England to facilitate Palestinian independence which is still to be fulfilled (there wasn't and in fact, Arabs were not even mentioned in the Balfour Declaration the Versailles Peace Conference, the San Remo Conference and the League of Nations Mandate decision, 5:05) - has produced a film.

Here are just a few fisking points:

1. Gt. Britain's involvement in Palestine with its consuls from 1839 and the whole Christain Restoration ideology for some three centuries - starting with the 1621 pamphlet of MP Sir Henry Finch is ignored (1:08) but is later mentioned (5:23). It's political analysis leads off with an immediate introduction of World War One.

2.  What do they mean by "all of Palestine"? (2:00)  TransJordan included? If so, what happened to it? Why was it excluded from the terms of the Mandate which were to reconstitute the national homeland for the Jews?

3. A "first promise" of the "contradictory promises" (3:01) is that of McMahon.  But what of the November 9, 1914 meeting of the British Cabinet?  Here:

Zionism was first discussed at a British Cabinet level on 9 November 1914, four days after Britain's declaration of war on the Ottoman Empire. David Lloyd George, then Chancellor of the Exchequer "referred to the ultimate destiny of Palestine."...In a discussion after the meeting with fellow Zionist and President of the Local Government Board Herbert Samuel, Lloyd George assured him that "he was very keen to see a Jewish state established in Palestine."

4. Did McMahon mean (3:10) by mentioning an "Arab state" also Palestine? Or was he referring to everywhere else but Palestine?

5.  Some Arabs joined the war effort (3:19)?  How many? How representative were they? Jews also joined the effort under the British flag.  And which "land" did the Arabs drive out the Turks?  It wasn't "Palestine" for the Jews of the Jewish Legion assisted with that.

See how simply devious they are.  And there's more.

YACHAD: A Paternalistic Pro-Palestinian Prop-up

If it weren't for Christian Arabs creating Palestinianism like George Antonius, their nationalism would be pitiful.

If it weren't for Christian Arabs assisting Arab terror like George Habash, their violence wouldn't have been as effective.

And now, we have Jews assisting Palestinianism:

Dear

My name is Rosa and I want to tell you about Partners to Peace, a new campaign launched by a group of 30 Jewish students based across the UK as part of Yachad Youth that I’m proud to be a part of. We’re raising awareness of Palestinian nonviolent activism and supporting the Holy Land Trust: a Bethlehem-based NGO that trains young Palestinians in pro-active, nonviolent methods of making change. If we manage to reach our £8,000 target, we will be able to give 30 young Palestinians the tools to make a positive difference in a non-violent way – young leaders who can be partners to a future peace.

One of the Holy Land Trust projects we’re supporting is called Young Girls Empowerment, and it teaches Palestinian girls to become leaders. This project is intended to inspire young women and give them skills so that they can be leaders, educated and engaged in their society. It is vital to me, as a young woman in the UK, to see this project succeed.

Partners to Peace is so important to me and everyone involved as we want to take active steps to oppose the occupation and work with Palestinians who live under it. As British Jews who are actively involved in our Zionist youth movements, Synagogues & J-Socs, we see the significant role we can play in promoting this good cause. I believe it to be our moral duty to help in whatever way we can.

There are two ways you can support Partners to Peace. First, please donate to the campaign. Whether you can give £20 or £200, you will be dramatically affecting the life of young Palestinians. You can also host a Partners to Peace Friday Night Dinner on either 11th or 18th November; bring your friends and family together, and use our kit to learn and educate about nonviolence. Sign up to receive a kit here.

Click here to donate to Partners to Peace to help train & empower young Palestinian nonviolent activists.

Thank you for reading and please take a minute to check out our page and give what you can,

It is not really different in kind from their previous fundraising project of this type, Kids Court in Conflict, which raised money from Jewish youth groups and the like to pay for Palestinian law fare against Israel in respect of arrested minors-- including for terror offences.

This particular soft sell entirely omits that the Holyland Trust

Activities

Conducts highly politicized tours promoting the Palestinian narrative and targeting church leaders and the international community, claiming to provide “cross cultural and experimental learning opportunities in both Palestine and Israel.” Suggests that its participants “limit information” given to Israeli airport security and hide the reason for their visits.
Sami Awad is Executive Director and Founder of Holy Land Trust (HLT). Awad has stated that non-violent demonstrations are “not a substitute for the armed struggle.” Awad has also minimized Israel’s legitimate security needs as a “manipulation” of the fear of another Jewish Holocaust. In a speech given at the “Christ at the Checkpoint” Conference in 2010, Awad stated that “the [Israeli] soldier now, who’s gone through that trauma experience [of visiting Auschwitz] now is trained in this weaponry all of a sudden is also put at a checkpoint inside the West Bank, between Palestinian areas.”
Speaking at the National Leadership Conference for the Vineyard Church in 2009, Awad told the audience: “We’ve actually done training in non-violence for Hamas leaders and other militant groups as well” (at 01:20:27 in the audio). Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department and the EU.  Further, the US Supreme Court upheld a law criminalizing material support for terror organizations.  (Holder, Attorney General, et al. v. Humanitarian Law Project et al. 2010).  The law defines “material support” as including “any property, tangible or intangible, or service, including… training, expert advice or assistance…”  (See above for details of US government funding of HLT.)
Supports anti-Israel BDS (boycotts, divestment, and sanctions), including signing a petition in May 2005 calling for the academic boycott of Israel, signing the 2005 “Palestinian Civil Society Call for BDS,” and supporting the Kairos Palestine document.
HLT produced a film called “Little Town of Bethlehem,” date a 77-minute documentary that tells the story “of three men of three different faiths and their lives in Israel and Palestine. The story explores each man’s choice of nonviolent action amidst a culture of overwhelming violence.” Using a façade of multiple viewpoints, however, the film actually presents a single narrative of Palestinian victimization and Israeli violence.
A December 2005 HLT conference included radical NGOs such as the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), Sabeel, and Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD).

Jewish Student Attacked, "H" Carved into His Neck - 1939

While researching for operations by the Hagana and Irgun in Haifa, I came across this, in the year 1939, of which I had no previous knowledge:

So I continued looking and found this:

And continued:

I presume that is a photograph of the "H" carved into his neck:

Another photograph from a newspaper, The Daily Herald from Provo, Utah on June 21, 1939:

Can anyone get this story's continuation from TIME Magazine, June 26, 1939?

Gwynn's Falls Park Junior High School, in Baltimore, has 2,500 students, of whom 50% are German, 30% Jewish. Recently its teachers noticed that a group of boys had taken to signing swastikas to notes passed around the classrooms. They shrugged, wondered what boys would think of to do next. Last week they learned.
During a baseball game in the school yard one day, some 40 boys with swastikas inked on their bare arms, gathered around Melvin Bridge, 14.
"Are you a Jew?" barked one.
"Yes," quavered Melvin Bridge.
"Why are you a Jew?"
No answer.
Thereupon the 40 fell upon Melvin Bridge, inked a swastika on...
And now finally a research paper:

...a more explosive situation in June 1939 when Milton Bridge, a ewish student at Gwynns Falls Junior High School, was attacked one Friday by a group of boys, many sporting inked swastikas on their arms. In the melee, they reportedly cut an “H” (for Hebrew) on the back of his neck with a “sharp instrument.” Bridge’s friend Morton Rosen, a nineteen-year old ex-seaman, went to the school on the following Monday to protect him, got into a fight with two students, and was arrested for assault. Jewish students from City College also showed up to “get even” with Bridge’s attackers and police chased some thirty City boys through the woods near the school. Four City students were suspended by Weglein, along with eighteen Gwynns Falls boys implicated in the attack on Bridge.

The episode inflamed the Jewish community. The Jewish Times devoted significant coverage as reports circulated of a “secret bund organization” operating in the schools. School authorities downplayed the incident, describing it as a “boyish prank” or “fracas between school children.” Weglein promised a full investigation, which found no evidence of organized antisemitism at Gwynns Falls or any other school. Instead, the investigatory report deplored the “great amount of publicity” which created an “exaggerated impression of what occurred.” It made a plea for “real tolerance” but made no recommendations except to place the suspended students on probation for the following school year. Criminal charges against Morton Rosen were tossed out by a grand jury.

Rosen and the City students demonstrated that Jewish youth were ready for a more aggressive “fight” strategy than their elders. Indeed, young Jews had not been silent in the face of earlier incidents; in 1936, ninth graders at Clifton Park Junior High School had protested the required reading of Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, charging that their classmates had used antisemitic passages from the book against them. Jewish Times columnist Maurice Shochatt had chosen not to cover their protest at that time but three years later he proudly hailed Rosen’s “solid punches in the defense of Melvin Bridge.” He was not the only adult to approve the teen’s actions: Rosen received pro bono representation from prominent attorney Ellis Levin and was given a job by a Jewish businessman. Taking heart from the younger generation, the Jewish community, it seemed, was now in a more fighting mood.

What ever happened to Bridge and Rosen?

In His Office, On The Wall

Here's a picture of the office of the Director-General of the Department of the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem Sheikh Azzam Al-Khatib hosting a delegation from the Republic of China to Palestine:

Let's take a close look:

We've seen that painting before:

It's an 1886 painting by Gustav Bauernfeind and it also hangs in King Abdallah's office in Amman.

It's a painting of ... Jews gazing into the compound at the Cotton Gate they were prohibited from entering until 1967 for many centuries.

Chutzpah that.

Who Were Those Jews and What Was That Site?

Jews broke into a religious sacred site today.  Scuffles broke out.

They marched toward the prayer plaza at the holy site with the Torah scrolls to conduct a prayer service and one of the leaders said:-

"We broke through. We made history"

The clashes were unprecedented and the scene was one of pandemonium and unprecedented violence as the Jews broke through security barriers with Torah scrolls in their arms. Moreover, Police stationed at the site did not intervene to stop the violence. Instead, they observed and even filmed the scene.  The breakers-in were met by a Jew who has lobbied against the group's approach to the holy place who pleaded with the protesters to “respect the custom of the place” and not enter with their Torah scrolls. His pleas fell on deaf ears.

One of the leaders of the protest said he and other Jewish leaders were not deterred by the outbreak of violence. “We will not forfeit our right to be here,” he said. “We will change this place, we will change this country and make this a home for all Jewish people.”

Are you thinking the protesters who shoved their way in were fanatical, extremist, right-wing Jews demanding that the government lift its status quo policy and permit Jewish prayer within the Temple Mount?

Nope.

They were Reform and Conservative Jews demanding the right to egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall Plaza.

Everything is okay when you're not Orthodox or right-wing, right?

__________________

Even the Aguda's Rabbi Avi Shafran noticed this:

The protesters didn’t choose to proudly venture onto the Temple Mount, the most Jewish spot on earth, despite being unfettered by halakhic concerns about ascending the Mount. They seem to recognize the wrongness of trying to “liberate” that holy site, as Reform Rabbi Gilad Kariv described what the protesters had done to the Kotel plaza.

Speaking of the Temple Mount, Reform Rabbi Eric Yoffie, a former leader of his movement, recently invoked the across-the-Jewish-spectrum condemnation of the recent UNESCO resolutions omitting the site’s connection to the Jewish People as requiring the upending of the status quo at the Kotel.  “Surely,” he wrote, “Reform and Conservative Jews, who have joined in the battle against UN Israel bashing, should have the right to pray at the Wall as a recognized community.”

Odd that he misses the irony of his thought.  The idiocy of the UNESCO resolutions was their refusal to acknowledge historical truth. But Rabbi Yoffie and his allies do something similar, glossing over the historical truth that, for centuries, the Temple Mount was where the Jewish people gathered to pray in, yes, “Orthodox” fashion, with men and women separated and with adherence to halakhic norms.

The UN Develops and Supports Jordanian Lies

This Arab-language news report informs us that there was a two-day "religious diversity" conference, which was launched in Amman, Jordan on Tuesday, organized by the United Nations Development Programme and the Centre for King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz for Global Dialogue (KAICIID) and attended by Muslim and Christian religious experts and media professionals from 25 Middle Eastern countries, and with the participation of more than 100 persons.

No Jews?

Jordan's Waqf Minister Wael Arabiyat said there that

"UNESCO's recent decision on Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque confirmed the right of Arabs and Muslims to the entire Sanctuary of 144 dunams."

He added that "this compound is not only just a mosque but that it has no relation historically to the 'holy city' of the Jews," and stressed "the right of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in the exercise of its control and the protection of Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Jordan's Minister of the Waqf explained that the UNESCO decision "confirms that Jordan has many options in this aspect can be practiced what he can from the protection and guardianship of Jerusalem and Islamic holy sites."

Oddly enough, he also said this in complete contradiction:

pluralism is a universal norm and that humans cannot live alone. To survive, humans need material wealth, spiritual welfare and security...these factors are the basis for positive dialogue...the civil state has existed since the beginning of Islam, citing Medina as an example of accepting the different components of society regardless of religion, race or colour.

Diversity?

Pluralism?

Spiritual welfare?

Positive dialogue?

Different components of society?

What BS. What lies.  And under the auspices of the United Nations.

So, Who Were Those Arabs?

You may have read that Arabs were the indigenous people in Palestine, before the Jews.

Previously the false link between "Palestinians" and the "Philistines" existed as a propaganda ploy.  But indeed it is false.

Then there was a reference by Saeb Erekat to the Natufians.

You also may have read that there is proof in that someone called Geshem the Arabian was a figure mentioned in the Bible at Nechemiah 2:19.

There are also sources like this, a bit non-academic, dealing with 'What Does The Bible Say About Arabs?'

So, if proof is brought from the Bible, what else is recorded there should be good for you, like in II Chronicles 21:16, where we read

"And the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines, and of the Arabians that are beside the Ethiopians; and they came up against Judah, and broke into it, and carried away all the substance that was found in the king's house..."

from which we can surmise that

a) Arabs existed;

b) but they were not indigenous to the Land of Israel as they were a neighboring people;

c) they were close in geographical proximity to the Ethiopians, i.e., across the Reed Sea in the Arabia Peninsula;

d) even the they tried to occupy the Land of Israel.

And was the latest UNESCO vote connected to all this?

Nechemiah 2:-

And I said unto the king: 'Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?'...send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.'...

And when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly, for that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel. 11 So I came to Jerusalem...And I went out by night...and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire...

...the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work. Then said I unto them: 'Ye see the evil case that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire; come and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.'

..But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said: 'What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?' Then answered I them, and said unto them: 'The God of heaven, He will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build; but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.'

Doesn't that echo today's events?

___________

For those who want a parallel New Testament reference that Arabs were not indigenous but were present:

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying...how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?...Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God." (Acts 2:4-11)

Tacitus Wasn't Tacit About Judaea

The Roman historian Tacitus wrote about the Jews.  In 109 CE.

About Jerusalem.

About the Jewish Temple, that existed.

About Judaea.

He was not Jewish.  He wasn't "Biblical".

He was an external source of testimony to the truth of what went on in a phantom geographical unit supposedly known as "Palestine" which actually was the Jewish national home.

Examples:

A.D. 70
Early in this year Titus Caesar, who had been selected by his father to complete the subjugation of Judaea, and who had gained distinction as a soldier while both were still subjects, began to rise in power and reputation...He found in Judaea three legions, the 5th, the 10th, and the 15th, all old troops of Vespasian's. To these he added the 12th from Syria, and some men belonging to the 18th and 3rd, whom he had withdrawn from Alexandria. This force was accompanied by twenty cohorts of allied troops and eight squadrons of cavalry, by the two kings Agrippa and Sohemus, by the auxiliary forces of king Antiochus, by a strong contingent of Arabs, who hated the Jews with the usual hatred of neighbours [note: "neighbors'. not residents of the same country -YM], and, lastly, by many persons brought from the capital and from Italy by private hopes of securing the yet unengaged affections of the Prince. With this force Titus entered the enemy's territory, preserving strict order on his march, reconnoitring every spot, and always ready to give battle. At last he encamped near Jerusalem.

and

A great part of Judaea consists of scattered villages. They have also towns. Jersualem is the capital. There stood a temple of immense wealth. First came the city with its fortifications, then the royal palace, then, within the innermost defences, the temple itself. Only the Jew might approach the gates; all but priests were forbidden to pass the threshold. While the East was under the sway of the Assyrians, the Medes, and the Persians, Jews were the most contemptible of the subject tribes. When the Macedonians became supreme, King Antiochus strove to destroy the national superstition, and to introduce Greek civilization [note: the origin of Chanukah-YM], but was prevented by his war with the Parthians from at all improving this vilest of nations; for at this time the revolt of Arsaces had taken place. The Macedonian power was now weak, while the Parthian had not yet reached its full strength, and, as the Romans were still far off, the Jews chose kings for themselves.

and

Under Tiberius all was quiet. But when the Jews were ordered by Caligula to set up his statue in the temple, they preferred the alternative of war...Yet the endurance of the Jews lasted till Gessius Florus was procurator. In his time the war broke out. Cestius Gallus, legate of Syria, who attempted to crush it, had to fight several battles, generally with ill-success. Cestius dying, either in the course of nature, or from vexation, Vespasian was sent by Nero, and by help of his good fortune, his high reputation, and his excellent subordinates, succeeded within the space of two summers in occupying [note: a foreign force "occupies" the Jewish homeland which is Judaea which is Judea and Samaria today-YM]with his victorious army the whole of the level country and all the cities, except Jerusalem...Our indignation was heightened by the circumstance that the Jews alone had not submitted. At the same time it was held to be more expedient, in reference to the possible results and contingencies of the new reign, that Titus should remain with the army.

Accordingly he pitched his camp, as I have related, before the walls of Jerusalem, and displayed his legions in order of battle.

The Jews formed their line close under their walls, whence, if successful, they might venture to advance, and where, if repulsed, they had a refuge at hand. The cavalry with some light infantry was sent to attack them, and fought without any decisive result.

and

The temple resembled a citadel, and had its own walls, which were more laboriously constructed than the others. Even the colonnades with which it was surrounded formed an admirable outwork. It contained an inexhaustible spring; there were subterranean excavations in the hill, and tanks and cisterns for holding rain water. The founders of the state had foreseen that frequent wars would result from the singularity of its customs, and so had made every provision against the most protracted siege...All the most obstinate rebels had escaped into the place, and perpetual seditions were the consequence. There were three generals, and as many armies. Simon held the outer and larger circuit of walls. John, also called Bargioras, occupied the middle city. Eleazar had fortified the temple. John and Simon were strong in numbers and equipment, Eleazar in position. There were continual skirmishes, surprises, and incendiary fires, and a vast quantity of corn was burnt. Before long John sent some emissaries, who, under pretence of sacrificing, slaughtered Eleazar and his partisans, and gained possession of the temple. The city was thus divided between two factions, till, as the Romans approached, war with the foreigner brought about a reconciliation.

As  Rivkah Fishman-Duker has written:

For ancient Greek and Roman pagan authors, Jerusalem definitely was a Jewish city. This article draws on references to Jerusalem from nearly twenty different sources, dating from the third century BCE to the third century CE, which are included in the late Professor Menahem Stern’s comprehensive anthology, Greek and Latin Authors on Jews and Judaism. An examination of these texts indicates the unanimous agreement that Jerusalem was Jewish by virtue of the fact that its inhabitants were Jews, it was founded by Jews and the Temple, located in Jerusalem, was the center of the Jewish religion. In these sources, Jerusalem appears in several contexts: foundation narratives, descriptions of and links to the Temple, historical events, usually relating to invasions and captures of the city, physical descriptions, and the derogatory use of the term “Solyma” by Roman writers after its destruction by Titus in 70 CE.  It is noteworthy that despite the negative views of Jews and Judaism expressed by authors such as Manetho, Apion, Tacitus and Juvenal, the Jewish identity of Jerusalem is always clear and never a subject of dispute. These ancient texts, therefore, disprove recent attempts by Muslims and others to deny the historic connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem and the location of the Temple in Jerusalem through fabrications and lies.

It truly is quite clear.  Genuine actual history has Jerusalem as the capital city of the Jews in their homeland called Judaea and within which stood a Temple surrounded by a wall and no mosque.

Arabs were their neighbors in another country. And the Romans were a foreign occupier who occupied Jewish land.

Jews do not occupy Judaea.

Jews are not occupiers of their own homeland.

The English language translation I referenced does not translate the key phrase that is important here. That phrase is:

Hierosolyma genti caput

This is rendered:

Jerusalem [is] the capital of the people.

This is clearly the Jewish people according to the context. But your translator merely has "Jerusalem is the capital." The words "of the people" are missing.
