Sorry, But No Proselytizing, Please

I boarded bus #148 from the Central Egged Bus Station in Jerusalem today at 13:00 to return home to Shiloh.

On the seat next to me I found a booklet, in Hebrew, entitled "Ben David" or, "Son of David", decked with Israeli flags on a background of Jerusalem's Old City walls:

Now, since the Yeshiva at Eli is called "Bnei David", someone could presume there is a Jewish connection but I knew otherwise (I have had 50 years of experience, actually). It was a missionary tract, a new translation in Hebrew of the Book of Matthew, and see below* on the anti-Semitism therein, sponsored by a nasty messianic Christian effort whose Statement of Faith parallels most of this group's statement, which is linked to at their site.

Here it is:

This is an act of proselytizing. Whoever you are, you are distributing articles of faith of a different religion with the intent of influencing Jews to convert.

I know you think that that is what being a good Christian is. But it is not. And yes, I do know some Christians really are upset at our reluctance to permit full-scale missionizing attempts and even slide into hate speech. As the US State Department's annual report notes:

A 1977 anti-proselytizing law prohibits any person from offering or receiving material benefits as an inducement to conversion; however, there have been no reports of the law's enforcement. A bill that would have restricted proselytizing further was promulgated in 2000; however, similar bills did not reach a final vote in the past and local observers do not believe that this bill will be enacted. Christian and other evangelical groups asserted that the draft bills were discriminatory and served to intimidate Christian groups. Missionaries are allowed to proselytize, although the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) voluntarily refrains from proselytizing under an agreement with the Government.

The law adopted into our Penal Code reads
Giving benefits to induce change of religion

174A.If a person gives or promises another person money, valuable consideration or another material benefit in order to entice him to change his religion or to cause him to entice another to change his religion, then he is liable to five years imprisonment or a fine of NS150,000.
Receiving benefit for change of religion

174B. If a person accepts or agrees to accept money, valuable consideration or another material benefit for the promise to change his religion or to cause another person to change his religion, then he is liable to three years imprisonment or a fine of NS49,800.

Change of a minor's religion

368. (a) If a person performs a religious conversion ceremony of a minor or performs some other act that leads to the change of a minor's religion, in violation of the provisions of section 13A of the Capacity and Guardianship Law 5722-1962, then he is liable to six months imprisonment.
(b) If a person induces a minor, by addressing him directly, to change his religion, then he is liable to six months imprisonment.

You may think that draconian (a futher tightening of restrictions was rejected [in Hebrew]) but there's a good reason for what is the law ro be the law of the land, the Land of Israel. All faiths and those of no faith are free to practice their religious beliefs in Israel. You can come here and do good deeds and do charity. Stealing Jewish souls, for that is what proselytizing is, is not a good deed. We do not practice that and as Hillel, who predated Christianity, said, "do not do unto others what you would not want done unto you."

Good and normative relations are being built between Christians and Jews in Judea and Samaria based on the recognition that if you believe in the Bible, then you must believe that what we are doing in Judea and Samaria is good and contributes to the ultimate benefit of all mankind. What we are doing is correct and right and has been prophesied.

Let us get on with our work, unhindered, or at least with positive assistance, and all will be better. We have much that could be shared but that doesn't mean that you have the freedom to feel that you can 'snatch'. Our other shared history is too painful to be gone over but know, we recall and remember and we have not fully reached the level of forgiveness and, to be truthful, there is no reason we should.

But we can look forward to a future in which we all can gain - but without any feelings of mistrust and suspicion on our part, which would be caused by the activity I described at the beginning of this post.  There is much to be lost.  Be careful, if only for your co-religionists who approach the task of being part of Jewish national reconstitution and their efforts be harmed.

Can we agree on that?

*
Although the Gospel of Matthew is considered to be the "most Jewish" of the Gospels, it contains one of the most anti-Jewish passages found in the Second Testament. Probably located in Syrian Antioch, the Matthean community defined itself over and against the synagogue.

Thus, the term "Jews" in the Gospel represents those who deny the resurrection and believe that the disciples stole Jesus's corpse (28:13-15). Through Jesus, membership in the one people of God is extended to include the Gentiles (24:14; 28:16-20; see also Great Commission), but they do not replace the Jews (4:18-13:58). Both Jew and Gentile participate in God's plan for salvation.

As Matthew's narrative marches toward the passion, the anti-Jewish rhetoric increases. In chapter 21, the parable of the vineyard (to which we have already referred) is followed by the great "stone" text, an early christological midrash of Psalm 118:22-23: "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone" (Matt. 21:42). Then, in chapters 23 and 24, three successive hostile pericopes are recorded. First, a series of "woes" are pronounced against the Pharisees: "you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets...You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell?" (23:31, 33).

According to the New Testament Gospels, Jesus, on his fateful entry into Jerusalem before Passover, was received by a great crowd of people. Jesus was arrested and purportedly tried by the Sanhedrin. After the trial, Jesus was handed over to Pontius Pilate, who duly tried him again and, at the urging of the people, had him crucified.

Then, Jesus laments over the capital: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it...See, your house is left to you, desolate" (23:37-38). And finally, Jesus predicts the demise of the Temple: "Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down" (24:2b).

The culmination of this rhetoric, and arguably the one verse that has caused more Jewish suffering than any other second Testament passage, is the uniquely Matthean attribution to the Jewish people: "His [Jesus's] blood be on us and on our children!" (27:25). This so-called "blood guilt" text has been interpreted to mean that "all Jews, of Jesus' time and forever afterward, accept the responsibility and blame for Jesus' death."

Yossi Sarid's Nazi Terminology

Yossi Sarid is so 'clever'.

It's not nice to use loaded, Nazi-like terminology.

So he does but says, well, we're all doing it:

Suddenly we are short of space here in Israel, which has become full to capacity and needs lebensraum. Every cultured person knows that this is a despicable German concept, banned from use because of the associations it brings up. Still, people are starting to use it, if not outright then with a clear implication: We are short of land, we are short of air, let us breathe in this country.

Of course, Yeshayahu Leibowitz and Israel Shahak used it way back, employing "Judeo-Nazi and also nazification.

More Oppression of Pal. Academia

No, not by "occupying" Israel.

By the Palestinian Authority:-

A prominent Palestinian professor who wrote an article criticizing the university administration where he works was arrested on Thursday by Palestinian Authority security forces in the West Bank...Abdel Sattar Qassem, who works at An-Najah University in Nablus, was ordered to be held in custody for 48 hours following a complaint from the university president, Rami Hamdallah.

...when Qassem arrived at the offices of the PA security forces in Nablus, he was informed of the decision to detain him for 48 hours for allegedly slandering the university by publishing a critical article.

In the article, Qassem criticized the university administration for refusing to comply with a court order rescinding its decision to expel four students.

...Qassem said that the problem was not only with this case, which has been ongoing, “but with the people who see the corruption and don’t do anything. Many officials see themselves as being above the law and justice. Perhaps they want to appoint themselves as gods or emperors, as they see that the educated are keeping silent and the youth movement is largely absent.”

Spewing Out Holocaust Revivalism

TEHRAN (ISNA)

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Wednesday that the volition of Muslims to wipe out Zionist occupation would continue entirely...

“The volition of Muslims to end the illegitimate Zionists' crimes and occupations will continue completely,” Mehmanparast said stressing Zionist regime feels has been locked in a sensitive blockade. ”The incidents happening in North Africa and Middle East during recent months and were followed by a kind of popular move and the awakening of Islamic world caused active presence and participation of people in management of their countries and moving toward the path of real independence and cutting dependency on hegemonies and Zionist supporters,“ said Mehmanparast as to the latest developments in Middle East and North Africa.

He added, “Muslims all around the world are interested in and concerned about the future of Palestinians and definitely the issue of Palestine is one of goals belonging to the all nations of the region.”

He expressed hope the move would continue to liberate Palestine and return people to their own land.

They so "reassure" us - of their hatred and Holocaust revivalism.

And

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iran was determined to eradicate Israel, ISNA news agency reported Thursday. "Iran believes that whoever is for humanity should also be for eradicating the Zionist regime (Israel) as symbol of suppression and discrimination," Ahmadinejad said in an interview with a Lebanese television network, carried by ISNA.

"Iran follows this issue (the eradication of Israel) with determination and decisiveness and will never ever withdraw from this standpoint and policy," the Iranian president added in the interview with the Al-Manar network.

At Least Rami Levy Got A Mention

Finally, a Glenn Beck story that might even please my wife:

At Temple Mount, Glenn Beck Draws Crowd of Hundreds

Sounding more preacher than commentator, the American conservative broadcaster Glenn Beck held a rally on Wednesday by a hotly contested holy site here and proclaimed the beginning of a global movement to support Israel, putting its Muslim opponents on notice.

The location of the rally — at the foot of the Temple Mount compound, which Jews revere as the site of their ancient temples and which now houses the Aksa mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam — lent a cosmic air to the event.

...The event sharpened the debate surrounding Mr. Beck’s visit, which has roiled liberal Jews in Israel and abroad and has divided those Israelis who have heard of him into two camps, passionate defenders and equally passionate detractors.

...“I do not agree with everything he has said or will say in the future,” said Danny Danon, a member of Parliament from the conservative Likud Party who helped arrange for Mr. Beck’s tour. Even so, he said, Mr. Beck “is a true friend of Israel.”  David Ha’Ivri, a spokesman for Jewish settlers in the northern part of the West Bank, known here by its biblical name of Samaria, added, “Israel is in need of alliances and friends who appreciate the mission of the Jewish people.”

...As he did at a rally he led in Washington last year, Mr. Beck gave out awards at his Jerusalem rally. One went to the settlement of Itamar and the Fogel children who survived a horrific Palestinian attack on their home in March that killed their parents and three siblings.

More incongruously, another went to the Israeli supermarket magnate Rami Levi. The commentary accompanying the award said that Mr. Levi was charitable and that his stores, built to serve West Bank settlement blocks [blocs?], have become havens of Jewish-Arab shopping coexistence. To most Israelis, though, Mr. Levi’s nationwide chain is known for cut-price chickens.

Has Sarid Become A Believer?

Yossi Sarid writes in Haaretz:

Glenn Beck, don't come back

Rabbis, settlers and others are cooperating with the former Fox TV personality's belief that most Jews will die in Armageddon so that Jesus can rise from the dead.

So, all of a sudden Sarid, secularist and mocker of religion, has repented and is caring for our 'souls'?

He's now 'faith-based'?

Or is it is political extremism that guides him in rejecting political, diplomatic, moral and financial support offered us?

P.S.  Sarid claims:

Bibi, who welcomed him like royalty

Should Larry Derfner Be Prosecuted or Just Shunned?

Here is Larry Derfner's thinking on the killing of Jews:

Still, I don’t think Hamas and their allies need any more encouragement, so whatever encouragement they might take from me or any other liberal Zionist is coals to Newcastle. What’s needed very badly, however, is for Israelis to realize that the occupation is hurting the Palestinians terribly, that it’s driving them to try to kill us, that we are compelling them to engage in terrorism, that the blood of Israeli victims is ultimately on our hands, and that it’s up to us to stop provoking our own people’s murder by ending the occupation. And so long as we who oppose the occupation keep pretending that the Palestinians don’t have the right to resist it, we tacitly encourage Israelis to go on blindly killing and dying in defense of an unholy cause.

And by tacitly encouraging Israelis in their blindness, I think we endanger their lives and ours, their country and ours, much more than if we told the truth and got quoted on Hamas websites.

There’s no time for equivocation anymore, if there ever was. The mental and moral paralysis in this country must be broken. Whoever the Palestinians were who killed the eight Israelis near Eilat last week, however vile their ideology was, they were justified to attack. They had the same right to fight for their freedom as any other unfree nation in history ever had. And just like every harsh, unjust government in history bears the blame for the deaths of its own people at the hands of rebels, so Israel, which rules the Palestinians harshly and unjustly, is to blame for those eight Israeli deaths – as well as for every other Israeli death that occurred when this country was offering the Palestinians no other way to freedom.

What do you think?

Is Larry sane?

Is he criminal?

Is he an extremist?

A kook masquerading as a journalist?

UPDATE

He's apologized and removed the post but...

...but anyone who followed the post over the past few days knows how excited he was in his responses and replies to those who praised him.  He speaks falsely.

Here is Lori's comment on this part of Derfner's apology:
What I mean is this: The occupation does not justify Palestinian terror. It does, however, provoke it. Palestinians do not have the right to attack or kill Israelis. They, do, however, have the incentive to, and part, though not all, of that incentive is provided them by the occupation. I believe that if Israel gives the Palestinians their independence, we have enough military power to neutralize whatever leftover incentive they would have to attack us. So my purpose with regard to Palestinian terror against Israelis is not to legitimize it, God forbid, but to end it.
*******************

...The bottom line is, this guy makes a living by writing. If he is such a colossal clod that he falls so far off the mark when expressing his feelings on his own personal platform, then he shouldn't really be trusted with informing the public about anything, should he? No, his original post...was a clear window into his hideous soul...But as a factual matter, the distinction he relies upon so heavily in his apology does not hold water. He is now saying that he was wrong when he wrote that Israeli behavior justifies Arab Palestinian terror, but his fog has lifted and what he meant to write is that Israeli behavior provokes Palestinian terror...Derfner is still saying Israel is to blame, i.e. is the cause of Arab Palestinian terror...

Beck Meets the Israeli Media

I attended today's Glenn Beck "Restore Courage" rally today at the Davidson Garden area which is where the Abbassid Muslim regime built its public buildings.

Here is an arty photograph of mine of Beck speaking:

He was powerful, spoke with passion in defence of Israel and noting the immorality in diplomatic affairs and the evil amongst its enemies. But there was no Islam-trashing. Here's his prepared remarks text. David Brog even "blessed" the "Palestinian people". Rami Levy received a medal for his charity and his efforts for creating coexistence opportunities between Jews and Arabs.

There was no missionary language. I met a Chabadnik from the UK who came specially. Many religious Jews were in the audience there:

But it seems Ben Hartman of the JPost felt these persons below deserved their own story and not just a paragraph or two for they are of Peace Now, after contributing quite a negative piece to The Atlantic blog:

It seems certain journalists just can't keep it professional but rather personal.

And here are the "Solidarity with Palestine" activists in their T-shirts who also made noise:

And least Mike Evans tried to help out with balance.

Eli Pollak and I did, too.

Barry Rubin's observations.

Those of Caroline Glick.

And I missed this:

A pre-show featured scenes from viewing parties all over the world, and at one point, it cut to South Carolina state Rep. Alan Clemmons, who recently succeeded in passing a state resolution claiming that because God deeded Israel to the Jews, there is no occupation of the West Bank.

Clemmons was fulsome in his praise for Jews who have taken up residence on territory that Israel captured from Jordan in 1967. “We look at those that are the settlers in Judea and Samaria, and we see our American pioneers of years past,” he said. “They are the heroes of that country.” The audience in Jerusalem, a mix of American Christians and Jewish Israelis, many of them conservative or orthodox, burst into applause.

And I left this comment there:

In writing " It’s a powerful message, this offer of salvation through politics. It also makes negotiation impossible. And that’s precisely the point", can we assume that Ms. Goldberg realizes that the point also could be that since "Palestinianism" was led by a Mufti who went over to Hitler as early as 1933 and broadcast from Berlin during WW II, that Hamas is the most powerful group on the ground not only in Gaza (from whence the recent rockts are coming) but most probably in Judea and Samaria and that's the reason this latest round of reconciliation and elections is on hold and that even the PA media is engaged in vile denial of Jewish nationalism and Jewish religious history here in the Land of Israel - and I could go on with examples - that negotiations with the Arabs not only has been worthless for 90 years but will continue to be so and that any resolution, from there point of view, which does not cancel out Israel as the Jewish state is a non-starter? And if she does, how angry is her writing on those subjects in comparision to her criticism of Beck?

Of course, relatively speaking, all Beck is trying to do is counter this Arab aspect and a standoff on this might not be too bad an idea.

Delete Internet Arab Terror

Anti-Zionist, anti-Israel and, yes, anti-Semitic, campaigns have made use of various Internet and Cyberspace fields, making the their own "occupied territories".

They have promoted a false version of history, have been moving hate and violence and have been engaged in terror of a new sort, political, economic, academic and even real dead terror.

It's about time we took back Holocaust denial Facebook pages, BDS web sites, propaganda news nets, Twiiter twerping and so much more, including all the new social media developments.

We sunk the flotilla.

We can delete this as well.

Rochester's J Street Gang

I grew up watching Our Gang.

In Rochester, there's a J Street Gang who think the Arabs agree and desire and will be satisfied with a "Two State Solution", which they don't and won't.  And that state, if it arises, UN or not, will be apartheid since Jews can't live there.

Here they are:-

Remember their faces.  If you meet then, and I'm sure they are all good, (too) well-meaning people - except for the scowling one who I'd guess is the Israeli Singer who is the fearless leader - encourage them to repent, politically.  Spiritually, I'm afraid that might be gone already.

The Real 'Final Word'

In the NYTimes report on the law case loss of Walajeh village claims, they being rejected by Israel's High Court of Justice and so the security barrier route nearby will not be radically altered, Mazin Qumsiyeh, a leader of the anti-barrier protests, said

...the access points [to be provided] wouldn't help because only landowners, and not farmhands, would be allowed through.   "This is the kind of thing that comes from Israeli courts," Qumsiyeh said. "They usually try to find some sort of compromise, so to speak, but the end result is that the military establishment has the final word."

Actually, Mazin, the 'final word' has been given by you and others amoung you who attempted and attempt to finish what was supposedy the Final Solution.

You allowed terrorists to represent you, from 1920 on and to murder defenceless Jews.

You allowed the Mufti to represent you, even when he was in Berlin, broadcasting pro-Hitler messages during World War II.

You allowed his memory and heritage to drive you and you parents' and grnadparents' generations to slaughter Jews in Hebron, Jerusalem, Hulda, Tiberias, Tel Hai and too many other places until 1947 and continued with the terror fedayeen campaign in the 1950s and then followed the path of PLO resistance since 1964.

We kept offering you to alter that 'final word' but you wouldn't, even after peace agreements and arrangements and negotiations were conducted.  When solutions were discussed.  When compromise was on the table.  When a Nobel Peace Prize was won (but not earned).

No, your 'final word' was terror, then and now, and incitement and hatred in school books and summer camps.

Maysin, we have heard and comprehended your 'final word'.

You were not asking for justice and we will not yield on security and existence.

At the Glenn Beck Dinner

After participating at the Eric Kantor press conference:

where he was sneak attacked, well, almost, by CNN demanding to know who was on the delegation of Congressmen and how much mony was involved and why were they here and not helping Obama with the finances of the US (taking a lead from Counterpunch) , and attending a family event welcoming a visiting cousin-once-removed, I attended the Glenn Beck Dinner at the Bible Lands Museum, administered by my friend Amanda Weiss.

Again, the message was we in Israel have a strong ally in the United States, one that is commited politically to a strong Israel and one that should exercise its historic rights in the country.  Beck will be going on to South Africa this week to highlight what real apartheid was and shame those who claim Israel is so.

Some scenes:

a)  Ariel Mayor Ron Nahman will Pastor John Hagee and Jon Voight:

b)  Rabbi Shlomo Riskin in conversation:

c) my very good and close friends, Marc Prowisor of One Israel Fund, Ruthie Lieberman of Jaffe Strategies and Josh Hasten, of the Algemeiner Journal and Bar-AM PR (l-r)

d) HaYovel's Tommy Waller with Ariel Fund's Avi Zimmerman:

I met some extremely dedicated people from the United States, working to assure Israel's security and the fulfillment of its historic destiny as a true light for the nations.

The talk was highbeat and way up.

I also hope some of my projects will be moved along as well.

Risky Ruskay and Sneaky George Soros

Received:

JCCWATCH.ORG
MEDIA ADVISORY
August 23, 2011
http://www.jccwatch.org/

John Ruskay, UJA-Federation CEO in New York Charged with Receiving Excessive Salary & Perks

The JCCWatch.org discovered through IRS annual Form 990's filings that John Ruskay, the CEO of the UJA-Federation of New York, received an excessive compensation package of over $675,000.00 per year in both 2008 and 2009.

The Founder of JCCWatch.org, Richard Allen states: "It is unconscionable at this time of tremendous need by the beneficiaries, that the head of the UJA-Federation received a compensation package of over $675,000.00 per year. John Ruskay, the Chief Executive officer of the UJA-Federation of New York, is not only taking an exorbitant personal compensation package, he has also been charged by JCCWatch.org with using his position to further his personal political ideology."

Allen went on to say "Ruskay is also using the UJA-Federation funds to support organizations with a clear political agenda. This is not surprising since he has a history of supporting radical groups including the original anti-Israel group 'Breira' during the 1970's. John Ruskay, through the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), recently supported a group actively calling for the Boycott of Israel to be allowed to march in the Israel Day Parade in NYC." This group, named after a far left political party in Israel, Meretz-USA, marched, as well as a group that funds organizations that support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel; The New Israel Fund."

Richard Allen further states, "John Ruskay allocated UJA-Federation Funds of over $1,000,000.00 (One Million Dollars) to the George Soros political front group, "Funders for Jewish Justice". That group spent over $100,000.00 on an ad attacking Glenn Beck. Neither George Soros or his front groups are known as Jewish Charitable organizations. There are urgent needs in the community that could have used that money. These needs are going unmet and the funding that could have made a difference was allocated to groups with a political agenda." JCCWatch.org calls on the directors of the UJA-Federation to review their funding and priorities. While any one individual is entitled to their political views, Jewish communal monies must be spent on charitable efforts; not political and personal pet projects that undermine the State of Israel.

Jewish organizational sneak attacks.

On Vintage "Occupied Territory"

It seems that Palestinians 'to march on Jerusalem' - and they will do so from four directions in a coordinated protest organized by the "Olive-Revolution" movement on the last Friday of Ramadan.

More details from the Olive Revolution site:-

We from the Olive Revolution (popular revolution and national humanitarian non-armed revolution against the Israeli occupation) start the campaign ‘knocking on doors of Jerusalem’...a response to all the Israeli policies of Judaizing Jerusalem. We state that Jerusalem will remain the jewel of the Arabs and capital of our future country. Jerusalem is the symbol of our pride and our national dignity...We are planning to knock on four doors:
1. The Northern section Qalandia.
2. The Western section of the Apartheid Wall in the village of Biddu, northwest of Jerusalem.
3. The Eastern door in Shufat.
4. The Southern door at Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem.

The honorable speakers: Aziz Dweik, Mahmoud Habash, Taysir Tamimi and Yusuf Jamal will join us as the Friday’s speakers in the four places mentioned.

Overall object is that the demonstrations will

"emphasize the fact that Palestinians are systematically denied entry to the city Israel, despite it being part of the territory occupied in 1967,"

the popular committee said.

Well, for me, Jerusalem was last occupied in 1948 when it's Jewish population was ethnically cleansed from the Old City quarter, from Shimon HaTzadik and from other neighborhoods.  And during 1948-1967, despite the right to visit the Western Wall and the Mt. Scopus cemetery, as agreed upon in the Israel-Jordan Armistice, here:-

Article VIII

2. The Special Committee shall be organised immediately following the coming into effect of this Agreement and shall direct its attention to the formulation of agreed plans and arrangements for such matters as either Party may submit to it, which, in any case, shall include the following, on which agreement in principle already exists: free movement of traffic on vital roads, including the Bethlehem and Latrun-Jerusalem roads; resumption of the normal functioning of the cultural and humanitarian institutions on Mount Scopus and free access thereto; free access to the Holy Places and cultural institutions and use of the cemetery on the Mount of Olives;

nothing happened.  Well, yes, what happened was that Jordanian soliders used to shoot and snipe from the walls of the Old City.

So, if anyone should be upset about an 'occupation', it is we Jews.  We were denied religious rights and free access for 19 years.  The Arabs have that and if they weren't so entralled about employing terror ever since 1948, there would be no restrictions whatsoever.

Activists, you wouldn't even need a non-armed revolution (wait, will it be non-violent or just non-armed?) if your fellow revolutionaries wouldn't be so thrilled and excited about using terror to kill Jews.

Peace is such a better revolution, peace with co-existence.

Oh, and leave the olive branches at home, they could be perceived as weapons.
