Farmer: Settlers burned my sheep alive

NABLUS (Ma’an) -- A farmer said he watched a group of settlers in the northern West Bank gather his sheep and set them on fire Saturday afternoon.

When he returned to the area, he told officials, he found 12 sheep burned alive, five with severe burns and two others that were only lightly burned. "I've lost at least $12,000," he said, calling the act abominable.

Mayor of Aqraba, the village near where the attack took place, Jawdat Bani Jabir, identified the farmer as 40-year-old Samir Muhammad Bani Fadl.

Fadil said he was out pasturing his sheep in the eastern part of the village when a group of armed settlers approached him in a white car and asked him to come and speak with them...Fadil fled and watched the group from an adjacent hill.

According to the farmer's testimony, the settlers gathered all the sheep into an area thick with brush, and set fire to the bushes.

Mayor Jabir called the attack vicious, and blamed the residents of the settlements encircling the area: Maale Efraym, Itamar, and Hetzit.

...Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official in charge of following up with settlement activities in the northern West Bank, condemned the attack demanding pressure on Israel by the international community to quell settler violence.

A. If we are "fanatic religious settlers", how could we do that on the Sabbath, when it is prohibited?

B. Will this be another faked story? If you go here, you'll read this about a story in which it was claimed that a 17-year-old Bedouin was found Saturday night in Jordan Rift Valley community with gunshot wounds:

The Bedouin shepherd whose body was found Sunday near the community of Gitit in the Jordan Rift Valley was apparently killed by the explosion of a 40 mm grenade, a police autopsy has found.

The authorities published their findings Monday in a forensics report stating that the youth expired after losing massive quantities of blood, due to a wounded artery in his neck.

Police postulated that the shepherd found the unexploded grenade – of the type fired by an M-203 launcher – and picked it up, which caused it to detonate. Palestinians had initially claimed that the 17-year old youth, Yehie Ata Bani Minia, had been shot by settlers.

His body was found by his family on Saturday night in an open field near Gitit...MK Uri Ariel (National Union-NRP) responded to the police findings and said, "For two days leftists, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Minister Haim Ramon and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have been concocting
connections between the pipe bomb at Prof. Sternhell's home, the Rabin assassination, and the death of the Bedouin near Gitit – and blaming the settlers for violence and unlawful acts. "Media correspondents and editors were quick to verbally attack 300,000 people in their usual manner, prior to a police investigation. "The Israeli Left is acting irresponsibly, time after time. It identifies totally with the enemy's claims, and when it discovers an opportunity to harm its political rivals it does so without a second thought."

C. We are checking. Seems there was a report of a fire near Gitit. By whom, we don't yet know. And if there actuaslly were sheep in there, also we don't know.

And by the way, who is acting against Daghlas?

Palestinian official in charge of the settlement file in the northern West Bank Ghassan Daghlas said Friday that a government decision would see his official vehicle confiscated...the decision followed a cabinet decision pushed through by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in an effort to cut government costs...low-level civil servants would not longer be provided with government vehicles.

The officials said he would be unable to continue his work without the vehicle, since settlements located next to villages outside the city of Nablus were inaccessible and he would no longer be able to travel to the regions and report incidents.

Daghlas said he was informed on Thursday that his efforts to appeal the decision were denied.

In Hebrew, the Arab admits he lied.  He himself ignited a fire that got out of control.  The Samaria Residents' Committee followed it up.
