Roger Cohen hasn’t convinced me that the Iranians can be dissuaded from the bomb. Notwithstanding its diplomatic rhetoric, Iran is on its course, for better or worse. President Obama’s appeal to Muslims will only delay the reckoning.
The Iranians have important allies, Russia and Germany. The Russians need Iran to keep oil prices high, and the Germans are too dependent on trade money to throw over the Iranians.
The hope of the West is that Israel will strike and that the United States will back it up, even to the point of bringing Iran completely to its knees. If this were done, it would be a lesson for other would-be nuclear powers. I disagree that the rest of the Arab world would react violently to this. I believe that Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas would see the writing on the wall.
We still (and always will) live in a world where power is the ultimate arbiter. To forget this places all freedom-loving people in peril.

Will the NYT alter its editorial line on Iran?
