Official Norway Just Lost My Sympathy

According to this JTA report

Norway's ambassador to Israel drew distinctions between the Oslo and Utoeya massacres and Palestinian terrorism. Svein Sevje said in an Israeli newspaper interview Tuesday that while the Norwergian bomb and gun rampages that killed 76 people and Palestinian attacks should both be considered morally unacceptable, he wanted to "outline the similarity and the difference in the two cases. "Palestinians, the ambassador told Maariv, "are doing this because of a defined goal that is related to the Israeli occupation. There are elements of revenge against Israel and hatred of Israel. To this you can add the religious element to their actions."

..."We Norwegians consider the occupation to be the cause of the terror against Israel," he said. "Those who believe this will not change their mind because of the attack in Oslo."

Since we all know that Arab terror preceded the 1967 war, "occupation" cannot be the cause - unless, of course, all of Zionism and the return of Jews to their homeland is defined as an "occupation". And, I'm guessing, the ambassador and the political establishment of Norway does believe that. Like that "boycott" sign at the island the day before the slaughter.

OC informed me of It was a bit of moral equivalence on the part of Norway's Foreign Minister when reacting to a similar terror event to that of last week which occured here in Jerusalem, the massacre of high school students at the Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva, when he linked IDF actions around Gaza to the Arab terroro.

Eight students were killed and 11 injured when a Palestinian gunman opened fire in the library of the Jewish seminary Mercaz Harav in West Jerusalem on 6 March. This is the most serious terrorist attack in Jerusalem for four years.

“I am deeply concerned about recent developments, and hope that this incident will not have a negative impact on the further negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.  The increasing violence in recent weeks in Gaza and southern Israel is very worrying. The use of violence seriously undermines efforts to ensure lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” Mr Støre underlined.

Weprin & Holliswood - Hometown Politics

David I. Weprin is "the scion of a vaunted Queens political family who repeatedly won elections as a city councilman and currently as a state assemblyman".

Last month, Democratic leaders in Queens and Brooklyn said they planned to designate Mr. Weprin, 55, as their party’s nominee in a Sept. 13 special election to replace former Representative Anthony D. Weiner.
David lives in Holliswood, Queens. His father, Saul, was the speaker of the State Assembly, and his brother, Mark, is a city councilman and a former assemblyman. David Weprin is an observant Jew with a staunchly pro-Israel viewpoint, which is significant in a district with many Orthodox Jewish voters.

Holliswood is from where I hail and I have known David, as they say, from before his Bar Mitzvah.

When asked how his position on Israel differs from that of his special election opponent, retired Rockaway businessman Bob Turner, Weprin, 55, said he did not know what Turner’s positions are.  “I don’t know where he’s been, other than running for office last year,” Weprin said, referring to Turner’s failed campaign against then-Rep. Anthony Weiner.

Weprin called former Mayor Ed Koch’s suggestion that voters in the district vote for Turner as a counter to Obama’s position on Israel “ridiculous.”

Amy Was Cremated But At Least There Were Kippot

Despite having hoped otherwise, it has been reported:

Amy was then cremated at the Golders Green Crematorium in north London after the service.  Family spokesman Chris Goodman said only family members and close friends would be present and added: 'Cremation is part of the family's tradition.' [???].  Shiva - the Jewish ceremony of bereavement - will be observed for two days starting at 5pm today at Schinder Hall in Southgate progressive Hall...The service, which, according to Jewish law, had to take place as soon as possible after the star's death, was conducted by Rabbi Frank Hellmer [that should be Hellner].

Just Who Is Doing The Inciting?

...there's something troubling about the coverage of this evil [in Norway] by the New York Times.  The title of the news report says a lot, Killings in Norway Spotlight Anti-Muslim Thought in U.S.

This is a key argument of the article:

Marc Sageman, a former C.I.A. officer and a consultant on terrorism, said it would be unfair to attribute Mr. Breivik’s violence to the writers who helped shape his world view. But at the same time, he said the counterjihad writers do argue that the fundamentalist Salafi branch of Islam “is the infrastructure from which Al Qaeda emerged. Well, they and their writings are the infrastructure from which Breivik emerged.”

“This rhetoric,” he added, “is not cost-free.”

The reporter, Soctt Shane got an expert to say (in sequence) 1) you can't tie the actions Breivik to the ideas in the anti-Islamist blogs but 2) if you use their own standards, then their writings did indeed encourage Breivik. In other words, in a rather roundabout way, Shane got his expert to confirm the thesis of the article.

Contrast that with how Isabel Kershner dealt with the subject of Palestinian incitement following the Fogel murders:

Yossi Kuperwasser, a retired Israeli general given responsibility by the Israeli government for monitoring Palestinian incitements to violence and to hatred of Israel, said in a telephone interview that while Mr. Abbas and the Palestinian Authority prime minister, Salam Fayyad, had been careful in their words, “they too encourage an atmosphere of terrorism.”

He noted, for example, that a senior Abbas aide had paid a call to the families of three Fatah militants killed by the Israeli military, conveying condolences from Mr. Abbas. Israel held the three responsible for the fatal shooting of a rabbi in the West Bank in December 2009. In addition, Israeli officials note, streets, summer camps and youth tournaments in the Palestinian Authority have been named for people who committed terrorist attacks.

The new focus on incitement against Israel, together with Israeli dissatisfaction over the Palestinian response to the brutal attack, seemed to pose a question about the Israeli government’s readiness to deal with Mr. Abbas as a serious peace partner — even though Mr. Abbas and Mr. Fayyad are widely considered moderates who have repeatedly said they would never resort to violence.

Instead of making the case that Palestinian incitement leads to terror, Kershner allows the Israelis to make the case. Then she inserts herself into the debate arguing that 1) incitement is a means Israel uses to avoid making a deal with the Palestinians and 2) even if it's it true Abbas has nothing to do with it. Of course, given that much of the Palestinian incitement takes place in the official media or official mosques of the PA, it really doesn't matter what Abbas utters when microphones are on, his government is promoting the incitement. Of course, unlike Shane this week, Kershner portrays the effects of Palestinian incitement as non-existent.

The other thing that's missing from Shane's report is any reason the anti-Jihadist bloggers might feel as they do.  A quick search of the New York Times website, shows that since January 1, 2009, there has been precisely one article that contained both the words "Malmo" and the word "Jews" in it. And it was a letter to the editor written by Abraham Foxman of the ADL, Antisemitism in Sweden.

The Swedish Committee Against Anti-Semitism has also lamented that “prejudice against Jews is spreading under a very thin veneer” of anti-Israel activity. Riots greeted an Israeli tennis team at a Davis Cup match in Malmo, whose mayor said (on another occasion), “We accept neither Zionism nor anti-Semitism,” equating Jewish national self-determination with the oldest form of bigotry in the world.

Yet Malmo has been in the news, because the increased antisemitism has been pushing Jews to leave. And one of the driving forces of the antisemitism have been the Muslim immigrants

with Anti-Semitic, Muslim Women

This piece, by David Swindle, associate editor for FrontPage Magazine and the managing editor for NewsReal Blog, relates how Larry David, the leftist creator-star of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm has "crafted one of his show’s greatest, most important episodes — and all apparently by accident."  Which is...?

Okay, here it is

(Warning – plot spoilers of course follow)

The premise of the episode: Larry and his friend/manager Jeff discover a new “Palestinian” Chicken restaurant and decide to go in spite of knowing that their fellow Jews would disapprove. Once there they chow down on the best chicken they’ve ever eaten, indifferent to the anti-Semitic posters on the walls. Larry also discovers a new object of lust: the sexy “Palestinian” woman who manages the restaurant...But how does Larry win the affections of the dark-haired Muslim beauty?

Later in the episode Larry and Jeff return to the restaurant with their friend Marty Funkhouser who has recently converted from Reform Judaism to Orthodox. He wears a yarmulke that’s more attention-grabbing and ostentatious than any Orthodox Jew I’ve ever known. Before they enter Larry tries to force Marty to take it off. A fight ensues, attracting the attention of the Muslims eating inside. When the fight is over Larry has ripped off Marty’s yarmulke and frightened him back to his car. When he and Jeff enter they are applauded and embraced as fellow anti-Semites. (One imagines that this is a comparable reaction to what Noam Chomsky got when he visited Hezbollah.) The “Palestinian” manager, Shara, [played by Anne Bedian, who is Canadian-born of Armenian background] then approaches Larry, sexually aroused by this act of a secular Jew tormenting an Orthodox Jew.

The inevitable sex scene between the two of them follows. Shara is the sexual aggressor, dominating over Larry as he lies on the bed. She shouts anti-Semitic slogans all the while. It apparently isn’t just Larry’s fantasy to have sex with a Muslim woman; rather, he wants to be degraded in the process. [note: "So it was weird to sit on top of Larry, and be like, 'You ready?' And he has this cushion patch on his crotch, to prevent any, whatever, accidental contact, and his assistant is bringing him his breath spray.” That’s hot! “ I was like, 'Come on Larry, I'm doing all the work here, you're not doing anything.' And he said, 'That's what's going to make it funny.' "]

But the satirical truth is kicked up to the next level when Marty walks into Larry’s house to hear the Jew-hating cries of passion upstairs. He sits to wait, forced to listen while Larry continues having sex with a woman who wants to exterminate them both. Afterwards Larry is indifferent at what his good friend has just heard, and Shara sees Marty as she leaves. There’s truth behind the satire. Adam Shapiro is the co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement and has a “Palestinian” wife who would likely grab Larry’s attention...The episode ends with Larry walking down between two competing protest lines at the opening of a new franchise of the “Palestinian” Chicken restaurant setting up shop next door to a Jewish deli. The unattractive Jewish wife of Jeff angrily swears and yells at Larry for him to come and join them on the pro-Israel side. Meanwhile, Larry’s new “Palestinian” lover is on the other side and says she has a sister named Yasmine she wants to bring to bed with them next time. The episode ends with Larry wondering which side to join and the audience knowing the answer...

Swindle concludes:

...politically the show was about as evil as one could get. (What next Larry? Going to have a kapo during World War II getting abused by Warden Ilsa?) But I couldn’t contain my laughter — if I was writing my own satire of the Left then this would basically be it. That it was written by a progressive and broadcast on HBO is even better.

Another reviewer, Blair Mandell, has this

...the majority of the show is based around Al-Babbas, a chicken restaurant run by anti-Zionist Palestinians. They're not quite militant and they don't seem to want to co-exist with Jewish people in the Holy Land, but they're relatively tolerant of Larry and Jeff's (Jeff Garlin) presence..Larry is also particularly attracted to Shara (Anne Bedian), one of the owners of Al-Babbas who is particularly outspoken against the Jewish people. In Larry's mind, nothing is more attractive than someone who hates you.

...The highlight of the episode comes when Larry and Jeff prevent Marty from wearing his yamaka in Al-Babbas, earning a standing ovation from the other patrons and amorous attention from Shara. She becomes so taken with Larry that she promises to "f*** the Jew" out of him as she shout outs anti-Jewish slogans to maintain her sexual excitement. It's ludicrous and a little unbelievable, but David still makes it work...Outwardly, Larry and Jeff are against the new Al-Babbas, but their hearts are with their stomachs on this one...the beautiful Shara, [later] promises a three-way with Larry and her sister if he joins her side in the fight. Larry's decision isn't shown, but his first choice will always be in his self interest....Larry's side visit to Funkhouser's Rabbi was also pretty funny as he alternately fought with her over the Palestinian Chicken and then apparently used it to force her to allow Funkhouser to go golfing on the Sabbath.

Arabs and the Left - Who Leaves Out Who?

One of the central points in the dialogue that has been conducted between the nationalist camp and the concessionist camp within the Zionist ranks has been "why is there no 'peace' camp amongst the Arabs?".  We have asked over the decades - well, I certainly have - why is their no balance?  The Israeli piublic and their supporters are divided and our 'other' is one solid block, even after the heroic efforts of persons like Rabbi Menachem Froman, for example (Rabbi Arik Ascherman is another story for he belongs ot the subversive element in the equation).

We have "Peace Now" and they?

Well, there is a new development. Salman Masalha writes in Haaretz that There is no Arab left in Israel, noting that

The left is supposed to bridge the gap and the national tension by positing a civic agenda that crosses ethnic boundaries. The question is whether there is such a leftist agenda among the Arabs in Israel.

Of course, it's not exactly what you think for he begins thus:

There's no left without Arabs, states Oudeh Basharat (Haaretz, July 19), adding: "Had the 11 MKs of the Hadash faction and the Arab factions evaporated during the vote on the Boycott Law, the difference in favor of supporters of the law would have increased from nine to 20 votes."

Incidentally, that Basharat, a Hadash activist, that is, a Communist, was excited about the opposition to the Nakba narrative, writing in March that it was a good 'commotion' and that

At least, there's no denial of the Nakba. Nobody claims the whole thing is a fairy-tale. The Palestinian narrative has won. The narrative that in '48 a people was exiled, by force, from its land, has been seared into Israeli and global consciousness. A vibrant, lively nation lived in Palestine, and a brutal act severed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. They were brutally and mercilessly thrown into the desert of doom and oblivion...[The opponents of the Nakba narrative] won't rest until they destroy any memory of the word "Nakba." They will use this opportunity to eliminate every trace of democracy as well.

To return to Masalha, who muses

...The question is whether there is such a leftist agenda among the Arabs in Israel. Because in order for there to be a genuine left in Israel, there also has to be some kind of Arab left. And it seems that such a left does not exist.

And he enters into a intra-Arab tit-for-tat:

Basharat did well to try to distinguish between his party, Hadash, and the other Arab factions - because Hadash is, in essence, a Jewish-Arab party, centered around the Israeli Communist Party (Maki ). However, Basharat cannot deny that Hadash has long since lost its unique character on the Israeli political landscape, and its leaders, especially on its Arab side, are not preoccupied with an ideological, social and political discussion, but rather with slogans and a chauvinistic, populist competition with the other groups in the Arab sector.

It gets better:

...the party that is supposed to fly the flag of the left aligns itself with the benighted ayatollahs of Iran, with the North Korean dictatorship - one of the darkest regimes on earth - and with the murderous tribal regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad that for months has been massacring Syrian citizens and cutting the throats of those who desire and are pursuing freedom.  Can the "pearls of wisdom" of the secretary-general of the Israeli Communist Party be a part of any leftist agenda? I doubt it. It seems that aside from the blind hatred for the United States and Israel that in the past decades has become a kind of populist Arab religion, he has nothing to offer, certainly not an agenda that a genuine left is supposed to present to Jews and Arabs in Israel.

So, what is there left (sorry for the pun) for the Arabs?

...it would seem that the words of the secretary-general of Maki, which we have cited here, not only fail to attest to sanity, but leave no reason for a rank and file Arab or Jewish citizen to vote for a party whose spiritual leader is a person who espouses such views.

And wehre does that leave us?

Mondoweiss vs. J Street: Left-in vs. Left-out or, Goyim Are Chopped Liver

‘J Street’ official takes care not to mention ‘occupation’ till after the speech


Philip Weiss heard Steven Krubiner, a J Street director for its Israel program, speak at a church in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.  He's upset:

Krubiner's message during the talk was very different from his comments to people who came up to him after the talk. Specifically, in his talk, Krubiner did not once mention the occupation, did not mention the humiliations of the Palestinian people, said nothing about the creeping fascism inside Israeli political life. No: the talk was all about the existential threat to the Jewish state posed by the failure of the American government to pressure Israel to make a deal with the Palestinians so that a Jewish majority would be preserved in Israel.

That bothers Weiss.  Because

His audience is Jews. The non-Jews in the crowd were chopped liver. He is concerned about changing Jewish opinion, and he is working on the conservative Jews in the crowd, the ones who give money to the Democratic Party and maybe give to J Street and transform the lobby. So he took care to say a couple nice things about AIPAC (!) and not to breathe a word about the occupation, and he was a little defensive about J Street's stance last winter when it opposed Obama's shameful veto of the anti-settlements resolution in the U.N. Security Council...Krubiner had trouble getting the word "settlements" out of his mouth.

This is the essence of my difference with J Street. An appeal that rests inside the Jewish community will be spavined by the fears and conservatism of that community. You can't even mention the occupation! The Jewish community will only leave the desert of collective blindness on Jim Crow in Israel and Palestine with the help of non-Jews. Keep the conversation inside our community, and we're lost.

So, the idea is that the more subversive you are, the 'better' you are?

Gee, I wonder how non-Jews would react to being dismissed as "chopped liver"?

Don't Cremate Amy Winehouse!

Having followed Amy Winehouse for the past few years, noting appreciatively her prominent and seemingly proud display of a Star of David pendant, I was upset to read the following:

Winehouse family confirms Amy's funeral will take place today

Amy Winehouse's funeral will be held today for family and close friends to attend as tributes continue to pour in for the singer. The ceremony will happen even though her cause of death is not yet known as police have said it will be up to four weeks before tests have been carried out.

She will be cremated in Golders Green, north London, after the private service.

...A spokesman for the family said last night: 'The funeral will take place on Tuesday and will be a family and close friends affair.' He would not reveal details about the location or time of the funeral, which Jewish law states has to take place as soon as possible

The singer, who will be cremated today following a Jewish service for friends and family...

Cremation is not a Jewish custom. See here; here; and even the Conservative movement forbids it.

Menachem Zivotofsky was born in Jerusalem. But was he born in Israel? Congress says yes. In 2002, it directed the State Department to “record the place of birth as Israel” in passports of American children born in Jerusalem if their parents ask...But [President George W.] Bush also said he would not obey it. The 2002 law, Mr. Bush said, “impermissibly interferes with the president’s constitutional authority to conduct the nation’s foreign affairs and to supervise the unitary executive branch.”

...This fall, not long after Menachem turns 9, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in his case, which seeks to force the executive branch to follow the 2002 law...A federal appeals court in Washington ruled against Menachem, saying the conflict between the branches was the sort of political question not fit for judicial resolution. Judge Harry T. Edwards, in a statement issued when the full appeals court refused to rehear the case, said the ruling “calls into question the role of a federal court in our system of justice.”...He went on to say that he would have ruled for the executive branch.

...The justices instead not only agreed to hear the case [after the Obama administration urged the court no to], M.B.Z. v. Clinton, No. 10-699, but also directed the two sides to address the broad question of whether the law “impermissibly infringes the president’s power to recognize foreign sovereigns.”

...In its brief to the court, the administration warned about the consequences of a ruling against executive authority over this area. Ever since the Truman administration, the brief said, “the United States’ consistent policy has been to recognize no state as having sovereignty over Jerusalem, leaving the issue to be decided by negotiation between the parties to the Arab-Israeli dispute.”  Allowing Congress to interfere, the brief went on, “would critically compromise the United States’ ability to help further the Middle East peace process.”

[Representative Anthony D. Fertility rates declined from 5.6 live births per woman of reproductive age (15-49 years) in 1990 to 28 per thousand in 2009 and the use of family planning methods increased from 40.2 per cent in 1990 to 59.3 per cent in 2009.

Collectively, these developments have led to a decline in the average family size from 6.9 persons in 1994 to 5.4 members in 2004 and to 5.1 members in 2009. Moreover, migration rates fell from 0.5 per cent in the 1980s to about 0.1 per cent in 2009.

As I have suggested previously in connection with the demographics of Arabs west of the Jordan River - better medical attention, increased family planning, more education and the natural decline of any population is what occurs.

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) is gravely concerned over the recurrence of incidents relating to violations of the right to life in the past two weeks due to the misuse of weapons and assaults on the rule of law in the Gaza Strip.  PCHR calls upon the government in Gaza to take necessary measures to ensure the non-recurrence of such incidents...on Sunday, 24 July 2011, the corpse of Fatima Ahmed al-Musaddar, 18, from al-Musaddar village in the central Gaza Strip, was brought to al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah.  The victim was hit by a bullet to the neck...Al-Musaddar was mistakenly hit by a bullet when her brother fired in celebration of her distinguished success of the General Certificate of Education (Tawjihi) with 95.2%...On 14 June 2011, the corpse of 3-year-old Einas Mohammed Daifallah, from the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, was brought to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.  She was hit by two bullets to the heart and the left shoulder.  According to her family, she was hit by the two bullets when she and her 4-year-old brother were playing with the weapon of their father, who is a police officer.   In another incident on the same day, 11 civilians, including 4 children, were injured when a person threw a hand grenade during a family quarrel among members of the al-Aklouk family...PCHR is concerned over the recurrence of incidents relating to violations of the right to life due to the misuse of weapons and assaults on the rule of law, and calls upon the government in Gaza to take necessary measures to ensure their non-recurrence.

Maybe there are too many weapons and armaments there?

In an interview with Press TV, Dr. Hasan Nowarah, a peace activist for Justice for Palestine, and a member of the Scottish aid convoy stuck at the Rafah crossing, gives a detailed account of his travel to the Rafah border, and subsequent rejection to enter Gaza.
Nowarah: We have [received] no excuse or any information for them denying our entry to Rafah.


...we were interviewed by the intelligence of Egypt in Alexandria and even the ordinary police. They took our IDs, they took our vehicles, and they took all our documentation and welcomed us to Egypt and said we can go after a week being stranded in Alexandria. The convoy joined us and we travelled from Alexandria to Rafah border...now they're telling me in the Rafah border that they're not aware of us coming, of our existence, that there was a convoy coming...While he was interviewing me, to my surprise, he opened his folders and I saw with my own eyes, and with Mr. Sharif who was dealing with us at the time, all our details were there...We have two 18 ton trucks and two other vehicles to be used by doctors and nurses between hospitals, and big trucks to be used by mobile hospitals. We have the equipment to refit a mobile hospital.


...Despite me seeing the papers, the official said that he was sorry and that he takes his orders from Cairo, not from us.

...Finance Minister Sigbjoern Johnsen added:

"Several United Nations Security Council resolutions and an International Court of Justice advisory opinion have concluded that the construction of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory is prohibited under this Convention."

...In 2009, Norway's pension fund divested in Elbit Systems, an Israeli defense electronics firm, because of its involvement in building Israel's illegal Separation Wall.

On March 29, 2011, EuropeNews headlined, "Norway: Socialist Left Party to Vote on Motion Calling for Bombing Israel if it Acts against Hamas in Gaza," saying:

...Breivik expressed strong hatred for Muslims and others with left of center views...
...Increasingly, it looks [to who?] like Mossad's fingerprints are all over them, perhaps cooperatively with CIA and/or MI6. Massive car bombs are one of their specialties. They're experts at these type operations, using convenient stooges for plausible deniability, usually without their knowledge.

Explaining the New Biblical Archaeology

Following my good few posts over the past years, here's some conceptualization from Alex Joffe's piece:-

...the most notable feature of the new biblical archeology is that it is largely unapologetic. Some of the largest projects are undertaken precisely on sites whose finds relate directly to questions of biblical history...Three excavations may characterize the new biblical archeology.

At Khirbet Qeiyafa, on a ridge overlooking the Elah Valley southwest of Jerusalem, Professor Yossi Garfinkel of Hebrew University is revealing a unique, short-lived, and massively fortified town dating to around 1000 B.C.E. The location, and the site's two gates, appear to match the biblical description of the Judean site of Sha'arayim. A short text found on a potsherd in 2008, while not yet in fully developed Hebrew language or script, appears to contain the words "judge" and "king." Guarding a primary route into Jerusalem, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that Qeiyafa was fortified against the rival Philistines to the west. Given the site's date, a connection with King David (a biblical hero but thus far a shadowy archeological figure) is tantalizing, although obviously still unproven. What is more obvious is that a high level of planning and organization was necessary to build this site, precisely in the place and time when we might expect from biblical texts that the early Israelite state found itself threatened by the Philistines.

Some six and a half miles west of Qeiyafa, Professor Aren Maeir of Bar Ilan University is excavating Tel es-Safi, in all likelihood the Philistine city of Gath. This enormous site contains a long sequence of settlement going back to at least 2500 B.C.E., and shows the advent of Philistines after 1200 B.C.E. With their Aegean lifestyles, the Philistines appear to have assumed control of existing Canaanite cities and then gradually assimilated. Dramatic finds continue to pour out of the site...

Finally, on the brown, dry plains of the northern Negev, a few miles from the town of Sderot, is the tiny site of Khirbet Summeily. There a team directed by Professors Jeffrey Blakely of the University of Wisconsin and James Hardin of Mississippi State University have begun excavation of a rural Judean village of the eighth century B.C.E. In its first season, among other techniques, the project is using advanced digital systems to record the precise three-dimensional location of finds along with images directly into a computer database...

Many will stop here and observe with satisfaction that the Bible has been "proven" by archeology. But this is far from the case. Whether the Bible is regarded as divine writ or dispassionate history, the relationship of those texts and the archeological finds cannot be credulously assumed. To their credit, most biblical archeologists today understand this, in greater or lesser degrees, which is why serious and healthy disagreement exists on virtually all issues.

Still, though it is as scientifically oriented as any other branch of archeology, biblical archeology remains typecast as a servant to biblical history and theology. But archeology globally is discovering with chagrin that public interest matters...believers find their faith confirmed, while non-believers are provoked and occasionally enraged. But the majority of people in between are stimulated to ponder the questions of just what realities are embodied in the biblical texts, the relationship between religion and science, and, most fundamental of all, the relationship between the past and the future.

Japan Goes Nuclear

No, not more problems with its reactors.

With Israel and international law.

I caught this report:

The Government of Japan called upon Israel today not to implement the construction of housing units in the West Bank and said it does not recognize any Israeli act that prejudges the final status of the territories in the pre-1967 borders.

Here's the official version.

There were no "1967 borders".

They were lines where military operations, stemming from the Arabs' aggressive onslaught against the nascent state of Israel on the morrow of the UN Security Council recommendation for a resolution based on partition which they didn't accept then nor until, supposedly, 1993 when the PLO 'recognized' Israel.

They were temporary armistice lines. Not borders. And certainly not internationally recognized.

They are part of a myth. They really never existed.

Japan has some border disputes. The one with Russia over the Kuril Islands, for example. Another with Korea.

How are those doing?
