Now, it's permanently memorialized on her statue in stone, in Camden:

Where'd Amy's Star of David Go?

For the past two years of her life, almost all her pictures, whether gossipy news or performances, showed her displaying a Star of David pendant quite prominently, even in Arab countries.  In this video, not once.  Coincidental or ethnic/religious washout?

Amy Was Cremated But At Least There Were Kippot

Despite having hoped otherwise, it has been reported:

Amy was then cremated at the Golders Green Crematorium in north London after the service.  Family spokesman Chris Goodman said only family members and close friends would be present and added: 'Cremation is part of the family's tradition.' [???].  Shiva - the Jewish ceremony of bereavement - will be observed for two days starting at 5pm today at Schinder Hall in Southgate progressive Hall...The service, which, according to Jewish law, had to take place as soon as possible after the star's death, was conducted by Rabbi Frank Hellmer [that should be Hellner].

Why "tradition"?

Don't Cremate Amy Winehouse!

Having followed Amy Winehouse for the past few years, noting appreciatively her prominent and seemingly proud display of a Star of David pendant, I was upset to read the following:

Winehouse family confirms Amy's funeral will take place today

Amy Winehouse's funeral will be held today for family and close friends to attend as tributes continue to pour in for the singer. The ceremony will happen even though her cause of death is not yet known as police have said it will be up to four weeks before tests have been carried out.

She will be cremated in Golders Green, north London, after the private service.

...A spokesman for the family said last night: 'The funeral will take place on Tuesday and will be a family and close friends affair.' He would not reveal details about the location or time of the funeral, which Jewish law states has to take place as soon as possible

and this

The singer, who will be cremated today following a Jewish service for friends and family...

Cremation is not a Jewish custom. See here; here; and even the Conservative movement forbids it.

So, Mitch and Janis:

please reconsider.

Perhaps Lord Chief Rabbi Jonathan sacks can intervene. Write to him.

Amy Winehouse Is Dead

The report:

Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27...When she was 10, she and a friend formed a rap group, Sweet 'n' Sour - Winehouse was Sour - that she later described as "the little white Jewish Salt 'n' Pepa." (see here)...

...Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene...

I followed her career, her antics, her failures, her mistakes and her amazing vocal talent at this blog. I followed her because she did have a wonderful voice, an enhanced zoftig figure and because she was unabashedly Jewish, if only because of her Star of David pendant so prominently displayed.

In the end, she proved just how much someone can waste a life.

London Ambulance Service said it was called to the flat in Camden Square at 3.54pm. Two ambulance crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and a cycle responder also attended, according to a spokeswoman. "Sadly the patient had died," she added.

There is a lesson in that as well.

Amy's Still Bearing the Star

She was booed off a Serbian stage in a confused performance, taking off one of her shoes, walking unsteadily over to her microphone, missing her cue a couple of times, and then delivering a half-spoken and mumbled version of her song

Amy, Kosher Is Better

Oh, oh.

It is not known exactly what caused the 27-year-old British singer to suddenly feel so ill, although her unease became so bad that she decided she needed professional help.  "Amy is in the clinic being treated for food poisoning,” a source told British newspaper The Sun.  "She hasn't said what she's eaten but has been telling patients that she feels dog rough."

Amy, you're Jewish.  Keep to a kosher menu.  I can't say it's perfect but it's your best chance to keep from food poisoning.

The Tale of the Deeply-Buried Star of David

Public drunkenness can lead straight to jail in Dubai – so we assume that Amy Winehouse was jet-lagged, ill or just plain tired at her Gulf Bike Week show last night.

The 27-year-old singer was said to be “incoherent and tipsy” according to one ex-fan, who said: “Before she’d got through three songs people were streaming out.

Well, I hope it was due to her usually prominent Star of David pendant:

A Jew in Dubai

No, not the Israeli Swim team.

Amy Winehouse:-

Thomas Ovesen, Chief Operating Officer, Done Events, said: “Having Pharrell Williams with his band N*E*R*D, Mike Posner and the amazing Amy Winehouse

performing over the same weekend is a real scoop and will not only ensure a full house during the Gulf Bike Week event but will also kick off an amazing season of great entertainment in Dubai.”

On that event:-

The Gulf Bike Week 2011 is the Middle East’s only dedicated urban bike festival in the region. In 2010, the Gulf Bike Week attracted over 30,000 enthusiasts as well as over 14,000 concertgoers.

In 2011, more than 150 exhibitors and lifestyle brands including Harley Davidson, Suzuki, Honda, KTM, Ducati, BMW, Kawasaki, Victory, Yamaha, Polaris, Pirelli, Ed Hardy, Bauhaus, and Oakley will be participating at the Gulf Bike Week.

Her participation was problematic as one Gulf paper headlined:-

On her Brazil tour in January, she

will be accompanied by former SAS officers and Brazilian police will be on high security alert to ensure her safety.

But, given her Star of David pendant prominently displayed the way she does,

she'll need a bigger guard detail in Dubai or she'll be hiding her religion.

Or arrested as a Mossad agent?

Seems some aren't familiar with Rita. So:-

Rita Yahan-Farouz, stage name Rita, b. March 24, 1962, is an Israeli pop singer and actress.

Rita began her career in 1980 as part of a musical troupe in the Israeli Army. Her first exposure to the general public in Israel was at the 1986 Pre-Eurovision Song Contest, which decided who would represent Israel in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Rita did not win, but her song, "Shvil habricha", along with her provocative performance, garnered much interest. In 1990, Rita finally got her chance to represent Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest with her song Shara Barkhovot (Singing in the Streets), but only achieved 18th place.

Handing Out Sweets

There is a traditional role in most synagogues that one of the elders hands out candies and sweets to the children to make sure they come to the synagogue and realize that it is worthwhile. Hopefully, they will continue to come when they are older and to pray.

Amy Winehouse is not an elder, but she is Jewish and here, at least, she's handing out sweets.

Amy's Very Jewish Father

It seems that Amy Winehouse's recent reconciliation with her former husband has infuriated her father Mitch, 58, who doesn't like the bloke and accuses him of getting his daughter involved in drugs.

As reported:

In a programme for Channel 4 called My Daughter Amy, which aired earlier this month, he said: 'Hopefully she'll settle down and meet a nice Jewish cabbie and give me some grandchildren.'

Amy was unhappy with documentary and took to her Twitter page to complain about her father.

She wrote: 'WHY don't my dad WRITE a SONG when something bothers him instead of going on national tv? An you thought YOUR parents were embarassing [sic].'

Mitch said he thought her comments were 'fair enough'.

Speaking to the Mail Online, he said Amy knew the documentary was being made and added: 'She's just being like any other kid who has found their parents' actions embarrassing.'
