We recently heard from Yisrael Medad, the Israeli editor of the Jewish blog that Wonkette editor Ken Layne threatened a libel lawsuit against. We asked Medad why he thinks Layne wrote to him in the first place.
Medad’s response:
Truth, I don’t know but:
a) He could have been having a bad day and then this “little guy” comes along and tweaks him. after all, he’s probably famous in Washington.
b) Maybe he’s done this before and I’m the only one with the cajones to have stood up.
c) Maybe he doesn’t realize the “Jew York Times” is a redux of 1984 Hymietown.
d) Maybe, just maybe, he’s a closet antisemite himself; Okay, let’s just say drawing-room Judeophobe to use the Continental phrase, and he thought that I really did know that he was sliding into antisemitism - I think he’s the one who posted it actually - and so he swung out. Maybe he thinks Jews think money and lawyers means money, so I would back off. I’m not rich, so it doesn’t bother me. I knew I was right.
But is there an “all of the above” option?
Mob - for a religious/ethnic/cultural group that has produced countless comedic entertainers in the last 100 years alone, i am utterly shocked at the humorlessness of the greater jewish community.
Me - so, that's it. that's all you've got to say? Not even 'whew, i'm tired of all this'? No apologies, no attempts at 'well, perhaps i did sterotype you', no nothing? Meanwhile the Wonkette blog is being taken to task for a posting that referred to "Rudy Jew-liani" in an interview with the "Jew York Times."
A rival blogger observed — "Wonkette, that foul-mouthed but titillating blogger of Washington foibles, seems to have gone anti-Semitic."
Wonkette has demanded an apology and implied legal action if one is not forthcoming.

Nobody has threatened you with legal action. I'm an editor, not a lawyer, and any stuff like this I forward to the bosses and lawyers, obviously.
Well, I am now tired of explaining humor/irony to people looking to be outraged by everything, so I will say good-bye.

Being fairly obedient, I watched the clip.
If I understand you and Wonkette correctly, you thought it was cute/clever or whatever, to borrow a term, "Jew--liani", from that clip and, without any comment about its specific ethnic frame of reference, slap it up on a new post the following day. And someone at Wonkette thought that it was so cute/clever or whatever, that they added "Jew York Times" for increased effect, if I am following the thinking over at Wonkette.
Well, I don't think the way you think. I think it was the grossest of manners on Wonkette's part to repeat the "Jew-liani" bit. Even you, now, seem to admit that it was, at the very least, a slur. But where does the "Jew York Times" come in? Are we now in a Jesse Jackson redux of that 1984 "Hymietown" remark? You'll see that I placed a question mark at the headline. That means asking, not stating a fact. I emphasized that Wonkette "seems" to have gone anti-semitic. That means perhaps, or maybe. (You didn't really, did you?)
So, to roundup:
I don't think I'll apologize. I think Wonkette needs to. I think that the "public square" can tolerate a lot: foul language, innuendos, etc. I don't think a responsible blog need repeat what I would consider an antisemitic reference. The way it appears on your site, there is no reference to the YouTube clip. Only if you click on 'more', is it revealed. That is an error, I think, on your part. Anyone reading the post as it appears sees something any normal, and I stress normal, person would assume to be a sliding pattern into a slur based on religion, especially that reference to the Jew York Times.
