Dog Bites Man: Man Bites Dog; Newspaper Bites Man

In a previous post, I informed you that King Hussein's dog was treated in Israel - unsuccessfully.

I wrote there that this was a ridiculous journalistic event.

I was wrong. It was worse:

Correction: King Abdullah's dog wasn't treated in Israel

On March 29th, Yedioth Ahronoth reported that a sick dog said to belong to Jordan's King Abdullah was treated at an Israeli hospital. The story was published on Ynetnews as well.

A further inquiry into the story revealed that the report was incorrect, prompting Yedioth Ahornoth to issue an apology to its readers.

Oh well.

So, We Can't Be Color-Blind To Race/Ethnicity?

If I read this correctly, they don't want to be defined as "white" 'cause they'll lose certain benefits and privileges? Or did I read that wrong?

Are they bringing back "swarthy"?

Students push UC to expand terms of ethnic identification
Middle Easterners want alternatives to 'white' and 'other.'

Nicole Salame...Her Lebanese-born mother told her Arabs are considered white, but Salame didn't believe her. Her high school counselor told her the same thing. "It did not make sense to me, it's so far-fetched," said Salame, who ended up checking "Other."

For years the federal government has classified Arab Americans and Middle Easterners as white. But confusion and disagreement have led some students to check "Asian" or "African," depending on what part of the Middle East they came from. Some, like Salame, simply marked "Other."

Now several UCLA student groups -- including Arabs, Iranians, Afghanis and Armenians -- have launched a campaign to add a Middle Eastern category, with various subgroups...The "white" label can hurt them with universities and companies that use the information to promote diversity, they say, and can result in the gathering of little or no statistical data on important issues, such as health trends in the community...

...UC officials are aware of the UCLA students' campaign...But any change in ethnicity categories could affect data trends, Robinson said. For example, if those who in the past would have checked white were to start checking another category, it would appear as a sudden drop in white applicants.

"It's reasonable that Middle Eastern people don't like to be lumped in with white, so I think there's a lot of sympathy for the issue," Robinson said. "But there are also a lot of issues" to consider.

...Gabrill, the son of Jordanian and Egyptian parents, said he had difficulties with the college application but, because he was seen as white, he wasn't identified as someone who needed extra help from high school counselors.

"So it's kind of like we're in between. We're not white, but we're not as disadvantaged as the other groups so we don't get any of that aid," he said. "So we're kind of invisible in that way."

What will happen to Israelis?

We've got white, light, black and in-between.

Only in The Middle East

Can we get more ridiculous?

King Abdullah's dog dies in Israel

After falling seriously ill during IDF offensive in Gaza, Jordanian royal family's pet secretly rushed to Jewish state for medical treatment at Beit Dagan veterinary hospital. Doctors regretfully fail to save beloved pet's life

The Jordanian royal family's dog was secretly rushed to Israel for treatment in the midst of Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Sunday.

Relations between the royal palace in Amman and the Beit Dagan veterinary hospital have been good for many years now.

75 (Years Old); 2 (Men); 40 (Lashes)

UPI reports that:

A 75-year-old Saudi Arabian woman has been sentenced to receive 40 lashes for hosting two unrelated men in her house...The Saudi daily newspaper al-Watan said the woman, Khamisa Mohammed Sawadi, has appealed her sentence...Sawadi says the two men in her house were a man she considers her son because she breast-fed him as a baby and a friend who was escorting him as he delivered bread to the elderly woman

Something is wrong with this story.

Why would two men be suspected of vice violations with a 75-year old woman?

Or

Why would two men want to have vice with a 75-year old woman?

Or

Why did one man need to be escorted by another in order to deliver bread?

Or

Will Ms. Sawadi be able to survive 40 lashes?

Modern-day Jonah Tale

A businessman who lost his mobile phone on a beach was amazed when it turned up — in the belly of a massive cod.

Andrew Cheatle thought his Nokia handset had been lost at sea after it slipped from his pocket. But a week later his girlfriend’s mobile rang and it was fisherman Glen Kerley saying he’d found the phone in a 25lb fish. Andrew got the handset back, dried it out — and amazingly it still works.

Andrew, 45, said: “I was messing about with my dog and my phone must have fallen out and been swept out in the swell. “I kept calling it but I gave up hope after a couple of days.”
