One of the al-Aqsa guards said that “several worshippers responded to a group of ultra-orthodox Jews breaking into the mosque courtyards from the Mughrabi Gate and provoked the worshippers who chanted against desecration of al-Aqsa...Israeli forces blocked them in an atmosphere of turmoil and tension, and guarded the extremist Jews inside the al-Aqsa compound.
And further details:
Israeli police arrested two Palestinian residents of Israel who were worshipping in the mosque two weeks ago on the same charges: chanting and facing Jewish groups that wander around the courtyards of the mosque.
No one "breaks into the mosque courtyards" with all the police and Muslim guards but you need understand that the entire enclosed compound is promoted as a mosque. It's their turf. All oif it, supposedly. Visiting hours are restricted, Jews may not display outward symbols of religiosity and they are accompanied not only by Israeli police but Waqf guards as well. Worse, Jewish historical artifacts and archaeological remains are damaged and destroyed.
This has been building up recently although it has been a long-time problem.

Dozens hurt in Temple Mount clashes
Police forces raid site to stop Muslim worshippers hurling stones at Western Wall, seize control of courtyard using stun grenades. Some 20 officers, 60 Palestinians injured. Five police evacuated to hospital in light condition
2009:
Hundreds of Arab Muslims on Sunday violently attacked a small group of Jews who ascended Jerusalem's Temple Mount to mark Yom Kippur, the biblical Day of Atonement, atop Judaism's holiest site.
The Jewish group was accompanied by a large police escort, which fired stun grenades at the riotous Muslims while helping the Jews flee to safety. Police subsequently bowed to Muslim demands and banned all non-Muslim visitors from the site for the remainder of the day.
And at the beginning of this year, in February:
...the Shin Bet also uncovered a growing Hamas presence in Jerusalem aimed at establishing a foothold on the Temple Mount. This is done by funding maintenance of the Temple Mount compound - called Al-Aksa by the Arabs - and in subsidizing school trips to the mosques there.
There is a plot afoot.
