Elimination in Three Stages

There are those, both Jews and others, who seek peace between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East.  They call the reality they seek to "solve" the Israel-Arab Conflict.  I prefer to term it the Arab Conflict with Israel and Zionism.

They may couch their rhetoric in liberal or even revolutionary language but there is a very dark side to their real meaning.  

Am I too extreme, or pessimistic in my outlook?

Let me explain in two stages.

To make their eliminationist demands - of Zionism and of Israel as a state - palatable, they first "attach" themselves to Jews/Zionists/Israel, as if they are we are equal, while at the same time, denigrating our national identity.  To illustrate:

It is also asserted, academically, that

 Arabs and Muslims Will Not Accept Israel as the Jewish State

Nevertheless, there are those that either naively or slyly seek to frame the "conflict" using this argument:

"Without Palestinians being free, Israelis themselves will not be free"

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu used that argument, too:

Liberate Yourselves by Liberating Palestine

and it's used similarly about Gaza:

 Until Gaza Is Free Israel Will Never Be Free

Another version is:

 you [Israel] will never be free until the Palestinians are

The second stage, pushed after they have confounded, confused and weakened the support for Israel and Zionism, is in what type of "freedom/liberation" are they talking about?

They are talking about eliminationism. This is the prologue from The National Committee for the Heads of the Arab Local Authorities in Israel's recent "The Future Vision of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel"-

We are the Palestinian Arabs in Israel, the indigenous peoples, the residents of the States [sic! we don't have two states yet] of Israel, and an integral part of the Palestinian People and the Arab and Muslim and human Nation.

It continues:

Israel is the outcome of a settlement process initiated by the Zionist–Jewish elite in Europe and the west and realized by Colonial countries contributing to it and by promoting Jewish immigration to Palestine, in light of the results of the Second World War and the Holocaust. 

Are there "Palestinian Arabs" in Jordan?

Are they truly "indigenous"?

Where else are there "Palestinian people"? Or are those the "refugees" from 1948?

How many "nations" are there? Arab, Muslim and human?

Isn't that, though, an echo of the Palestine National Covenant?

Article 1:Palestine is the homeland of the Arab Palestinian people; it is an indivisible part of the Arab homeland, and the Palestinian people are an integral part of the Arab nation.

Article 2:Palestine, with the boundaries it had during the British Mandate, is an indivisible territorial unit.

By the way, can you imagine the Knesset adding to that Jewish Nation Bill this, from that Covenant (original wording crossed out):

Article 7: Jews Non-Jews of Palestinian Land of Israel origin are considered Palestinians Israelis if they are willing to live peacefully and loyally in Palestine Israel.

What is prohibited to we Jews/Zionists is quite permitted to the Arabs-called-Palestinians.

And therein lies the deadly trap. First, they attack ideologically. Then they present a false history and reality. And after that, as a third stage, they make demands which they have couched in a seemingly logical construct which are but a repeat of the Mufti and Arafat's denial and destruction program from almost a century ago.

Those who play along with this, such as the new British Na'amod or Peter Beinart, even though their intentions - and I am being quite liberal in giving them the benefit of the doubt as much as I feel I am wrong in this - are providing "cover" for an evil design on Israel, Zionism and the country's Jews.

They need to sober up.

Dear Leftist (far or more to the center), when I read about this aspect of last night's demo in Tel Aviv, protesting the adoption of the Jewish Nation Bill:

a group of supporters of the far-left Arab movement Balad were filmed, chanting, “With spirit and blood we will free Palestine.”

by equality, can I claim all of Judea, Samaria and Gaza, as well as most of Jordan, as a legitimate claim?

Can I do that in Ramallah and Hebron, protected fully by the Palestinian Authority police but saying "we will liberate all of Eretz-Yisrael, from the sea to the desert"?

Can I expect Palestinian democracy to permit that?

Should Israel Revoke Citizenship as Punishment?

I recently read this: 

Judges have revoked the Israeli citizenship of three men jailed after being caught, for the third time, setting fires to forests in the Galilee. They will be deported to Jordan.

No, I didn't.

What I did read was this:

Judges have revoked the British citizenship of three men jailed for grooming young girls and they may now be deported to Pakistan.

Israel's Nationality Law reads: 

11.(b)The Minister of the Interior may terminate the Israel nationality of a person who has done an act constituting a breach of allegiance to the State of Israel.

If "grooming", by which someone, most usually a sexual predator, sets the stage for abusing another, usually underage girls, by gaining dependent trust using gifts or drugs, alienating them from their family and community accompanied by means that instill fear, is an offence that can have one's citizenship cancelled and then be deported, I think destroying state property is an equal crime.

This country suffered greatly at the hands of Arabs.  Zionism was not only having Jews return home, recreate their language and culture and provide a safe haven but to cause the earth, the land, the soil of Eretz-Yisrael to be rejuvenated and that the desert may bloom:

The wilderness and the parched land shall be glad; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose.

As noted, Aaron David Gordon, in his 1918 essay, Our Tasks Ahead, wrote:

In my dream I come to the land. And it is barren and desolate and given over to strangers; destruction darkens its face and foreigners rule in corruption. And the land of my forefathers is distant and foreign to me...

Reclaiming the soil and causing it to give fruit and provide food is a Zionist mitzva, a commandment, of the highest order.

He who rejects that or seeks to destroy what we have created in this once desolate land is an arch criminal.

And he/she can deserve such punishment.

Foreign Aid Reduces Terrorism? Nope

This article seems to confirm what I have been telling foreign diplomats stationed in Israel or visiting "peace team" leaders who confer with me and that is if your aid money is limited to bequeathing wealth, for all the good reasons in the world, on the Arabs-called-Palestinians, but do not insist on joint cooperative programs with the Jewish residents or do not seek to influence internal democracy, you can forget about it.

The abstract:

Is foreign aid effective in reducing terrorism? 

The existing evidence is mostly negative. 

We argue that this pessimistic outlook on the efficacy of aid as a counterterrorism tool is partly a function of focusing on only one type of aid: economic aid. Governance and civil society aid can dampen the participation in and support for terrorism by altering the political conditions of a country. 

We expect countries that receive high levels of governance and civil society aid to experience fewer domestic terrorist incidents than countries that receive little or none. Using a sample of aid eligible countries for the period from 1997 to 2010, we find that governance and civil society aid is effective in dampening domestic terrorism, but this effect is only present if the recipient country is not experiencing a civil conflict. Our findings provide support for the continued use of democracy aid as a counterterrorism tool.

I was right all these years decades.

Jewish Extra-Territorial Citizenship

Oliver Locker-Lampson had an idea and on April 12, 1938 he raised it in the House of Parliament of which he was a member, saying:

my idea is this: Although I hold to the creation of a State in Palestine of possibly millions of Jews who will act as a buffer State against any military monster who may advance from the North to seize the Canal or cut the pipe-line which provides our only oil supply in the Mediterranean, the purpose of my Bill is this: It is forgotten that it is a very ancient principle, that of preserving citizenship to subjects of a State who remain abroad. For instance, there have been more citizens of Norway living outside than in Norway in one period of that country's history. I would like to give the potentially persecuted Jew in Europe the chance, if he wishes it, of becoming a Palestinian subject. Why, for instance, should Jews in Poland, who cannot move to Palestine, not be able to take up extra-territorial citizenship? They would then become what Jews are in Palestine, protected persons under the Mandate and freemen of a State. They could pay a yearly fee for the Government of Palestine, which would make that place once again a land flowing with milk and money.

He was opposed by a Colonel Brown who declared

I understood my hon. and gallant Friend to say that Jews everywhere should have Palestinian nationality. That is just enough to inflame all the feelings of patriotism amongst Mohammedans in Palestine. I say quite seriously to my hon. and gallant Friend that statements of that kind made in this House may mean the loss of several lives of British police and soldiers in Palestine. 

At the end of a tie vote the Bill was ordered to be brought in.

But it did not evolve into legislation.

And we know what happened to the Jews of Europe.

Make "Palestine" Eretz-Yisrael

I read this item and learned that Amazon.com is selling T-shirts that say "Make Israel Palestine Again".  That is an encouragement to end the State of Israel. Similar shirts are available on Etsy.com.

The slogan "Make Israel Palestine Again" is used often on social media not to mention the chant "From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free".

Early Arab Rejectionism

I have pointed out that the Arabs who resided in the territory of the Palestine Mandate, intended to be reconstituted as the historic Jewish national home,
consistently adopted a policy of rejection of all diplomatic solutions.

Most know the 1937 Partition Plan and that of 1947 by the UN which were rejected.

No compromise.

The Khartoum Conference's Three Noes from September 1967 continued that negative tradition.

Here, from the British White Paper of May 15, 1948, are the two earliest examples:

A.

[in 1922] an Order-in-Council was issued providing for the creation of a Legislative Council, to consist of the High Commissioner, 10 official members and 12 elected members, of whom 8 were to be Moslems, 2 Christians, and 2 Jews. The Arabs refused to take part in any form of government involving acceptance of the Jewish national home and boycotted the elections held in 1923, thus making it impossible to set up the Legislative Council.

The High Commissioner then attempted to reconstitute the Advisory Council on the lines of the abortive Legislative Council, but, of the 10 Arabs nominated by him, 7 withdrew their acceptance under political pressure, thus preventing the transformation of the nominated Advisory Council into a representative body.

B.

The High Commissioner then attempted to create an Arab Agency analogous to the Jewish Agency, to which Article 4 of the Mandate had assigned the duty of “advising and cooperating with the Administration of Palestine in such economic, social and other matters as may affect the establishment of the Jewish national home and the interests of the Jewish population in Palestine,” but the Arab leaders refused this offer on the ground that it would not satisfy the aspirations of the Arab people, adding that they had no desire for the establishment of an Arab Agency on the same basis.

Chaim Weizmann and TransJordan

Ze'ev Jabotinsky demanded Palestine. All of Palestine. Including TransJordan.

That's what the 1923 Zionist Congress decided:

Trans- and Cis-Jordan are "one historical, geographic and economic unit" and "in accordance with the legitimate demands of the Jewish people", the Congress expects that an expression of such will be achieved in Transjordan and eventually it will be carried out.

He declared 

that the opening of Transjordania to Jewish settlement is an essential condition no longer opposed by the Transjordanian Arabs but by the mandatory administration.

“A Transjordania which would have the same population density as Palestine has room for one and a half million immigrants, while a Palestine on both sides of the Jordan would harbor five or six millions,” Jabotinsky asserted. “A political regime which would promote settlement instead of hindering it would in a few decades solve the tragic problem of the Jews without harming their non-Jewish neighbors.”

Jabotinsky's 1935 list of the obligations a friendly mandatory power to the Jews and of the Jews to themselves should included

1. A land reserve for agricultural colonization following a geological survey of uncultivated land in Palestine and a loan for reclaiming land.
2. A similar survey in Transjordania.

If not granted land, then Jews should be able to purchase them.

Unlike Chaim Weizmann, his rival, you may have thought.

Really?

He held, for a while at least, similar views.

Earlier, there was a scandal when the Mizrachi representative Yehoshua Farbstein revealed negotiations for purchase of lands on the east side of the Jordan River in which he was quite involved.

How much was Weizmann pro-Transjordan?

Well, he said in May 1926

I openly and explicitly stated here as well as in London that we see in Transjordania the eastern part of Eretz Israel. However, we will build the bridge across the Jordan not with soldiers, we will make our way there by Jewish work, with the plough and not with the sword, only through the good will of the two nations, the Jews and the Arabs, will we cross the Jordan.

He pressed the first High Commissioner Herbert Samuel on the matter and latter replied in a December 20, 1936 item:

Sir Herbert Samuel, first British High Commissioner for Palestine, explained last night why Transjordan was not included with the Holy Land under the Balfour Declaration. He told the Anglo-Palestine Club that a pledge had been given to king Hussein that Transjordan was, like Iraq and Hedjaz, to be included in the Arab domains.

The explanation was indirectly a reply to Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, who recently raised the question in Jerusalem before the Royal Commission now conducting hearings there. Sir Herbert said the Arabs claimed that Palestine was also included in the Arab domains, but the British would not admit this.

And, as this book relates, he valiantly attempted to complete purchases but the British viewed that effort with displeasure and he never asserted the Jewish claim after that, as Herbert Samuel had declared in October 1934:

“The rumors that Transjordania will be annexed to Palestine are unfounded. Transjordania is a part of the British mandatory area and negotiations are now under way between the Government of Great Britain and Emir Abdullah, ruler of Transjordania, as to the conditions and form of administration of the country”

Weizmann eventually wilted.

The story:

History aside, Jordan is Transjordan is part of historic Palestine.

This calls for the opening up of Transjordania at the earliest possible moment for Jewish settlement. On this pivotal issue of Transjordania all the energies of the Zionist movement should now be concentrated.

Arabs have been pushing maps (and anti-Israel Jews, too) showing how "Arab Palestine" underwent reduction these past 100 years, "disappearing".

They forget and don't remind you of our Jewish experience with a diminishing land mass.

Why Arabs Were Palestine's "Non-Jews" Only

The simple fact is that "Palestine" was to be the Jewish national home and that all other residents were simply "non-Jews" rather than "Arabs" and that is because the Arabs were to have the rest of most of the Middle East, what was left of the huge Ottoman Empire.

Only a fraction of the area was to be Jewish:

Exactly Who Is Inciting?

Breaking the Silence, as do other anti-"occupation" groups and additional far-left organizations, complains about "incitement".

They are never "criticized".

They do suffer verbal and occasionally physical violence.  I oppose that and have always argued, no matter what these groups are doing, to engage in dialogue or, if they refuse to do that (for fear they will lose the argument or worse, show how really ignorant and bad-as-propagandists they are), simply offer up another narrative, the facts and the alternative analysis, outlook and perspective.

Here is their reaction to one of their founders being assaulted by someone who came to Hevron (he doesn't live there):

Another Long-lost Relative?

As you may know, I am fairly sure I am related, okay, convolutedly, to Queen Elizabeth II.

Now, I have another genealogical adventure.

My daughter sent me this blog about lost art and what jumped out?

Dutch commanding general General Henry G. Winkelman surrendered and the country fell under German occupation.  

He was, I learned,

born in Maastricht as the son of Julius Hendrik Winkelman and Charlotte Henriëtte Braams

Am I related to him?

I doubt it since the possibility of him having Jewish lineage is probably nil.

But, still...

A Grave Matter, Er, Matter of a Grave at the Temple Mount

I am not sure, to tell the truth, whose grave this is:

but I think it is that of Sharif Hussein ibn Ali, father of Abdallah, and Hussein and more.

He died and was buried inside a vault inside the Western Wall.  The funeral procession was impressive, I'll admit:

The Murder of a Woman in March 1948 in Jerusalem

While browsing through the Jewish Historical Press website, searching for some items, my eye caught this incident from late March 1948:

This version of events leaves us only one clue why would her brother commit murder and kill her.

Her shaven head.  In Paris, women considered collaborators suffered that ignominy. 

I expanded my search.  Here is the HaTzofe account, misspelling her name:

It adds that during her forced detention, she had been interrogated by "one of the underground organizations". They wanted to know details of her connections with Arabs and British soldiers".

Davar, the Histadrut newspaper, adds that she was one of eight women who had been abducted and held by the Lechi.  It is claimed that her relationships with Arabs was well-known.  A few weeks earlier she had injured her foot falling from a British military vehicle. She had requested not to be brought to Hadassah hospital for treatment as it was too "Jewish".

According to this account, her brother had referred to her as a whore who had dishonored the family.

In that connection, I think I once posted about the activities earlier on, during World War II, of Hareidi active opposition to Jewish women dating Allied soldiers.  The group, a spin-off a Neturei Krta, was called Bnei Pinchas.

I found a reference from 1943

and then later, of them threatening to burn down someone's residency, perhaps a bordello:

A Secret: Twenty-Three Out of Five Hundred

Pierre Van Paassen, who was born in the Netherlands and grew up in Canada, was a journalist.

In 1933 he visited the Temple Mount with a British Intelligence officer, both incognito. They sought an inside look at the radical Islamic movement by listening to the various sermons being preached in regards to the political turmoil that was taking place in then British controlled Palestine.

One of his books lists Jabotinsky as a co-author and he assisted Jabotinsky's movements' spin-off actions.

In another of his books, he writes of a "best-kept secret" by which he meant the Jewish people's, and specifically, Jews of Eretz-Yisrael, participation in World War II.

One of the elements of this secret concerns the saga of an engineers company of 500 Jews in the King's West African Rifles at Mechili, Libya:-

The men of the company, led by Major Felix Liebman of Tel Aviv, were laying down a 12-square-mile minefield against Rommel's advance when they were spotted by German scout planes. To make a long and gripping story short, for several weeks they were strafed and bombed from the air and bombarded by German and Italian tanks. They, in turn, knocked out several score tanks and repulsed wave after wave of German and Italian foot soldiers.

At one point, the Germans sent a soldier with a white flag to offer the company the opportunity to surrender. Liebman rejected the offer, and, pointing to the blue-and- white flag mounted on a makeshift base, told the German: 'We have no white flag; we have only this blue flag of Zion.' The German said with astonishment: 'You are Jews?!’ and left. The siege continued, and by July 2, when the Jews repulsed the last assault, only 23 men were still alive.

That day, a column of trucks came along bearing the remnants of a Free French unit that had held the line against the Germans in a bitter month-long battle at Bir Hakheim and was now retiring to the rear. The French commander was General Marie-Pierre Koenig, who embraced Liebman and emotionally congratulated him and his men for having held out at Mechili. As the exhausted Jews mounted the trucks while the French loaded the remaining equipment, one of the Jews took down the 'Jewish flag' and started to fold it.

Koenig asked why he was folding it. Liebman told him that the British did not permit the Jews to fly it. Koenig retorted: 'I am in command here! I don't give a damn about those regulations! That flag goes on my car in front, next to the [French] Tricolor. That is where it belongs. We have come through victoriously, the two of us.' He then turned to his men and called: 'Legionnaires! The Jewish flag! Salute!'

Don't Forget: "Palestine Was for the Jews"

From Pierre Van Paasen's "The Forgotten Ally" published by Dial Press, 1943:-


"When in later years an Arab nationalist movement was born in Palestine and its leaders, in support of their opposition to the Jewish national home, invoked the correspondence that had passed between Sir Henry McMahon and the Sherif of Mecca at the start of the war and incited the peasants to bloodshed and destruction of property by alleging that Britain had broken her pledge to make Palestine an independent Arab country, Sir Henry McMahon, then long since retired from government service, wrote two letters to clarify the earlier understandings. In the first, dated March 12, 1922, addressed to the British government, he said that he had intended to exclude Palestine from the area of Arab independence as fully as the Syrian coastal regions to the north. In a second letter, addressed to the editor of The Times and published by that newspaper on July 23, 1937, he wrote: 'I feel it my duty to state, and do so definitely and emphatically, that it was not intended by me in giving this pledge (of independence) to King Hussein to include Palestine in the area in which Arab independence was promised. I also had every reason to believe at the time that the fact that Palestine was not included in my pledge was well understood by King Hussein.'" [pp. 115-116]


"Sir Ronald Storrs, who as Oriental Secretary to the High Commissioner (Sir Henry McMahon) handled the Anglo-Arab correspondence, wrote in his [book] Orientations: 'Palestine was excluded from the promises made to the Arabs before those British (military) operations which gave freedom to so large a proportion of the Arab peoples.'" [p. 116]


"In the year 1937, when Palestine was plunged into chaos and bloodshed by the Arabs, and their leader, Haj Hussein Amin, Mufti of Jerusalem, again invoked the McMahon correspondence, William Ormsby Gore, who was attached to the McMahon staff in 1916, stated in the House of Commons, on July 21, 1937, 'that it never was in the mind of anyone on that staff that Palestine west of the Jordan was in the area within which the British Government then undertook to further the cause of Arab independence.' Colonel Lawrence also took the view that Palestine was excluded from the areas in which Britain intended to foster Arab independence and said so in a letter to The Times on September 11, 1919." Zionism, Ms. Rose, Evolved From Gaza

I once worked with, or for, Jacqueline Rose. 

Not in the for-pay sense.  I read through a long review essay she composed on a novel Ze'ev Jabotinsky wrote, after we met and discussed matters at my first Limmud. Sorry, can't find that text now. I have also commented on her forays against Zionism.

In an interview with her now, I caught this

She has also written extensively – attracting some criticism – about the history and nature of Jewish nationalism, using the techniques of psychoanalysis to call for it to confront its fractured psyche. “You can feel her pain throbbing through these essays,” wrote the late Peter Preston in a review of her 2007 book The Last Resistance, which sought to track the evolution of Zionism to modern day Gaza.

Zionism, in part, evolved from ancient and pre-modern Gaza. 

In 2005, Israel destroyed Jewish post-1967 Gaza.

That brought us a continuous rain of rockets and mortars.And terror tunnels.

In 1948, the Jewish kibbutz Kfar Gaza was destroyed by invading Egyptian troops.

That brought us the fedayeen and constant, daily terror all throughout the 1950s.

In 1929, the small Jewish community in Gaza City was chased out by the Mufti's terror gangs in an act of ethnic cleansing.

In 1662, Shabbtai Tzvi had himself pronounced Messiah in the sizable and important Torah center that was Gaza.

In the late 16th century, Israel Najara composed the Shabbat hymns we sing at our table in Gaza.

Jews lived in Gaza in the Ottoman period, the Crusader period, the Early Arab period, Byzantine period and all the way back in time to the Talmudic and Biblical period

I  repeat: Zionism evolved from Gaza.

And from Judea.

And from Samaria.
