They were originally deployed there because of their expertise with the “visit, board, search, and seizure” mission, which was exercised repeatedly during the years of sanctions on Saddam. Over time, they came to fill in for some of the missions the OHP-class frigates performed. We’ve been phasing the frigates out. Now there’s a Coast Guard “cutter” in the Gulf probably 6-8 months out of the year. (The Coast Guard calls it a “cutter,” but it’s frigate size and deploys with a helicopter.) They work the Somalia anti-piracy mission too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
